CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
‘It’s Weeeeekday Williams, and I’m dishing out some groovy Thursday tunes!’ Amy smiled to herself as Donovan tuned in to the cheesy Eighties station on his car stereo. They were driving to Southend, but this was no seaside jolly. This was work. Amy had barely slept last night, and this morning she had been tempted to stay in bed. The day off was long overdue, given they had both worked the weekend. When it came to rest days, most officers used their time wisely. Time with family and friends usually took priority, while others liked to play hard – going out on the lash in the evening and spending the next day recovering from the night before. Rarely did officers use their days off as an extension of their work. But Amy could not justify a trip to Southend during work hours, particularly given her rank. If there was legwork of such nature to be completed, then they usually asked a unit from Essex Police, or sent a detective constable to do the job.
It seemed that DCI Donovan shared Amy’s thinking. Or was he using the trip to Southend as an excuse? She had a feeling he was keen for some alone time, away from the cameras and in the confines of his car. Before he’d joined the team, they had shared the briefest of intimacies. What may have been just a kiss to some was a huge deal to Amy. When it came to relationships, she either gave herself completely or not at all. Donovan had felt like a kindred spirit. Like her, he was battle-scarred from a previous relationship. He did not trust easily. But him joining the team had stalled their romance. Though it wasn’t easy for Amy to hold back her feelings, especially when he looked as good as he did.
Her glance dwelled on his navy Hugo Boss sweater. Today she had worn her blazer, teaming it with black jeans, a white shirt and a pair of black Converse trainers. A mixture of casual yet smart wear for her day off. Her thoughts wandered to Sally-Ann. Amy had long battled the re-emergence of past traumas, but this time another piece of the puzzle had clicked into place. Sally-Ann was pandering to Lillian because she knew where her baby was. Why else would she lie in court?
‘Welcome to my old stomping ground.’ Donovan turned down the music as they passed the border into Essex. The last time they were in Essex was when Lillian Grimes showed them the graves of the three remaining murder victims, which she had hidden for decades. But Amy did not want to dwell on Lillian’s misdeeds. She would speak to Sally-Ann when the time was right. For now, her focus was on finding Stacey’s killer before he struck again. Today, they were visiting Michael Richards. His late fiancée, Claire, was the original victim of the Love Heart Killer. ‘You started off here, didn’t you?’ Amy said, forcing another train of thought.
‘Yeah, it was a baptism of fire.
