I added Ramona Mathers's name and age to the board, pausing with the marker in midair. "She was a stay-at-home mom." My voice deflated around the words.

"So?" Archie asked.

"So, she didn't have a leadership position a guy like this wouldn't want her in," Graham said. "That, or the quasi-Biblical language is a decoy."

"I'm not sure we know enough about her to know that yet," Archie said, looking up from his phone. "According to the Bexar County DA, Daphne's office was cleaned out and they donated all personal effects to a women's shelter, and sent all the non-professional papers to the incinerator."

Damn. "Should we head to Ramona's home to see if she got letters?" I asked.

Archie shook his head, raising the phone to his ear. "Our job is to see the big picture. But I'll advise Comal County to search. Even if she did, there's no guarantee she'd have kept them---most people throw that kind of shit away because it scares them. I say we assume they were being watched until something proves us wrong."

True. They shouldn't. But they do. Like the note in Lindsey Decker's laundry basket.

But I wasn't supposed to be thinking about Lindsey. Focus, Faith.

Archie reeled off instructions about any kind of written correspondence to Deputy Leavy and hung up, and I started pacing. Three victims. Perfectly planned. Perfectly spaced. Perfectly executed.

"Psychopaths often see the world upside down," I said. "But three murders so close together, all of them this immaculately carried out, isn't a novice. I'm willing to bet the lawyer isn't our guy's first kill. Just the first one he wanted us to know about."

"If a killer is focused on killing, why would he want us to know about any of the murders?" Graham asked. "Why wouldn't he want to just fly under the radar and keep killing more and more people? The guy wants attention."

I shook my head when Archie opened his mouth to argue. "I don't think he does, Graham. It's easy to get there on the surface of what we see here, because it fits the narrative we've all been fed. Like the Zodiac sending letters to the newspapers, our guy sent a finger to Skye. But Zodiac didn't write on his victims."

"Zodiac was also never caught," Archie said. "Let's keep the focus on someone who was. Take Bundy or Manson. How did the detectives handle the case?"

"Old fashioned police work," I said. "I'm not saying don't do that. I'm saying let's do both. I'm good at this stuff, Archie, and I've never had much of a chance to use it. But whatever this is"---I swept an arm at the stacks of folders in the room---"I don't think it's the screenplay stereotypical serial wanting to play cat-and-mouse with the cops. My gut says his game isn't Catch Me if You Can, it's more like Codebreaker. He's trying to tell us something. Whether or not it leads to him...who knows? What did he write on Ramona, Archie?"

"'Evil lies not in the shouts of the guilty, but the silence of those watching.
