Before Riley knew it, Saturday had dawned and he was helping the twins haul the grills out of the garage. They had three and they would all get used today.
Janson and Jerome, the two oldest Laytham brothers, arrived early with their broods. Both had been married for several years and had two kids apiece. Jerome’s wife was pregnant again and Jerome was hovering. Riley didn’t blame him. She was huge. He wasn’t stupid enough to say that out loud, though. Pregnant women, in his experience, weren’t reasonable. They were, however, frightening, and he kept his distance when at all possible. He waved when she came in, but didn’t leave his position flipping hamburgers over the smoldering coals.
He was on his second batch of burgers when a wave of silence swept over the growing gathering, punctuated by the ear-piercing squeals of children. They didn’t care about the new arrivals, but the adults certainly did. Riley closed his eyes, cheeks heating in mortification. Then he put down his spatula, took a deep breath and turned, smile at the ready.
The smile faded away fast at the sight of Mike at the edge of the lawn. Damn, the man looked good. Really, really good. Riley grabbed a nearby empty tray and stuck it in front of him to hide his body’s sudden and extreme reaction. From the brilliance of Mike’s smirk, Riley figured he, at least, had deciphered the cause of the action.
Riley knew he looked stupid, but he kept hold of the tray as he crossed the grass to greet Mike. There were kids present. His unruly body wasn’t appropriate.
“Hi.” Riley came to a stop a few feet from Mike.
“Hi,” Mike said, his eyes crinkling with pleasure.
“Hi!”
Riley glanced down to find the owner of the high-pitched voice staring up at him.
“Hello, Charlie.”
“I want to see the kittens again.”
“Maybe later.” A short, blonde woman stepped forward, hand outstretched. “You must be Riley. I’m Lisa.”
Riley took one hand off his tray to return the automatic gesture. Lisa used the grip to pull him in for a hug. She was small, a little round, and surprisingly strong. He couldn’t squirm free and had to endure the embrace until she decided to release him.
When she did, Riley found himself the focus of intense scrutiny.
After several tense moments, Lisa nodded in satisfaction. “You’ll do.”
“Thanks. I think.”
Lisa patted his arm. “Why don’t you introduce me around?”
“Allow me.” Walter, brother number three, appeared. “I’ll get her over to Marie—the one who looks like she swallowed a watermelon—and she’ll take it from there.”
“Fabulous!” Lisa linked arms with Walter.
“Shit, we’re in trouble now.” Despite his words, Mike didn’t sound very worried. Riley thought he was underestimating Marie’s ability to gossip.
Alone again, an awkward silence enveloped them.
“Hi,” Riley said again.
“Why don’t you come give me a proper hello?”
Oh, Riley did not trust that leer, not at all.
A second later, he found himself being yanked around the corner. Before he could open his mouth to protest, he was sandwiched between the side of the house and Mike’s solid heat.
