Wendigo

I used to love all sorts of myths and legends. It all started with studying the tales where I was born. Only the stories in the central lands were a bit boring. I'd even say gray. When I arrived in Sommriket, the legends and stories of the local people seemed interesting to me. I believed that for a falconer’s work it was important to study every legend about a particular monster. After all, the better I knew the enemy, the easier it would be for me to deal with him. At least that's what I thought as a child. Now the picture is a little different. It was completely saturated with dark colors. The sister's story also added more shadows. It was like a warning or some kind of prediction.

We went deeper and deeper. With every step, that claw print popped up in my head more and more often. It yelled at me, “Hey, here I’m. Get ready to meet me, buddy.” I was very afraid. My fur puffed up. I barely restrained myself from losing my breath, but as a result, my heavy inhalations and exhalations became worse than the dark forest.

“Wait,” Ancona looked around and began to slow down. “They stopped.

“That’s what I was counting on,” I replied.

I looked around. I didn’t care now how the Roshans looked at us through the darkness. I was only interested in Wendigo. Where are they hiding and why haven’t they torn us to pieces yet? I tried to look more closely at every tree, every branch. I was looking for a true nightmare in all its glory.

“Well, a Wendigo is easier to deal with than a crowd,” Timo said.

“It depends how you look at it,” Ancona chuckled. “Vampires are considered successful predators, Wendigo are excellent.”

“Is that how you raise our morale?” Timo walked in the other direction from me. “Or you're telling the truth. There is something here.”

“What?” I was distracted from the views into the void and approached my partner. Timo stood by the tree and carefully licked it with his eyes.

“Claw marks,” Timo turned to me. “The same as at the foot of the forest.”

“Omatic, Omatic, bushevi bone vie[15],” Ancona spoke Elvish as her native language.

“What does it even look like?” I tried to catch myself thinking that the girl would talk about it as something small and thin.

“Do you want to know what a vampire's nightmare looks like?” The girl came closer to me. “Then listen carefully. This is a long, lean creature with a muscular body.” Ancona held out her hand and showed us its approximate shoulder height. “Skin color is white. I'd even say transparent. It's like emptiness behind the skin. On the head are long and branched horns. The mouth is teeth without lips. It's like he's always grinning. Like a wolf.”

Unfortunately, I was only right about the fact that the creature prowling somewhere among the trees is thin. Everything else confused me and made my imagination play against me. Searching for an animal based on someone's description was a stupid thing to do, especially for falconers.
