CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

*Kaldon “Kal/Prez” - President*

There are about a dozen things I want to say, but not a single one I can. I almost hear her voice in my head arguing, “Can’t or won’t?” — if only it was that simple.

Lace keeps her focus forward along the shoreline, while I keep mine down, watching her feet hit the smooth, damp sand, each leaving a perfect mark beside my big, clunky boot imprints. The urge to take them off, the weight of their heavy material weighing me down even more with the addition of the wet sand, makes my feet tingle. I hard-brake and do exactly that, first untying and yanking off the boots that are keeping my feet restrained, then peeling off my socks before tossing everything to the side to pick up on our way back.

When I start walking forward again, Lace is a ways ahead, glaring at me with one of her dark eyebrows raised under the messy swoop of her bleached hair. “You finally grow out of not liking to get your feet sandy?”

I shrug and continue walking toward her, covering each of her footprints with mine before the water rushes up and they disappear forever.

Her previous look of disbelief completely transforms as she bursts into a fit of laughter. “You look positively miserable right now.”

“What? Why?”

“The expression on your face says it all.” More laughter tries to escape out of her, but she closes her mouth and it comes out like a weird gurgle instead. “Want me to give you a piggyback ride?”

I relax my face, which was admittedly a bit more tense than usual, and take her offer into serious consideration. She turns around and pats her shoulders, bare not too long ago but now covered by Chaz’s shirt. I place my hands on each shoulder, but then come to my senses and let them fall slowly down her arms instead. “I don’t want to break you, Lace.” Words never more true, and in so many more ways than one.

Her laughter drowns and smile disappears, along with our footprints, as we continue walking and the water eats them up. Lace harrumphs and picks up her pace.

“Listen, things are going to be a lot different after this weekend,” I state, catching up. She glances at me, lips pressed firmly together, then continues watching ahead of us. “Some of it is to be expected, some of it is up to your Universe.” She still refuses to respond, despite my efforts, so I clear my throat and add, “You think your Universe will give me any favors? Maybe at least one?”

Like being able to keep you when all is said and done?

Her chest rises and falls, and she shakes her head and says, “I have no idea what to expect from my Universe anymore. These days, I understand it just about as much as I understand you.”

I look at her and say in my head what I wish I could say aloud. There really isn’t much to understand. I care about my club… and I care about you.
