Dr. Itard soon weeded out three of his six students. Allibert survived the cut and so did Pierrot. Dr. Itard's class irked me. It irked Claude and most of the other students, too.

“I'm not deaf,” Pierrot told us now. “I'm hard-of-hearing.”

One day, when the subject of the savage boy came up in printing class and Pierrot complained, as he always did, that hearing people were always mixing deaf students and crazy people, Claude tried to tease him.

“We're all the same to them,” Pierrot insisted for the hundredth time.

“We?” asked Claude gently, teasing Pierrot about his new-found status as a hard-of-hearing person.

“We,” Pierrot repeated angrily.

Then he cut us to the bone. “People confuse hard-of-hearing people with those who are deaf and crazy,” he signed, grinning.

“I'm only teasing!” he protested when we turned away.

To us, it wasn't funny. Claude refused to look at him, as did I. Massieu looked annoyed.

Pierrot blushed suddenly, and apologized.
