Chapter Five

Lewis left John's office despite the man's protests. He had too much stuff in his head to deal with relationship angst right now. His wolf might want to curl up in the vampire's lap, but his human half needed space.

His art called to him. He needed to purge his muse before he could focus on anything else. Conflicting emotions churned his stomach and crowded his mind. He couldn't make any commitments to John, a man he barely knew, not when he had babies on the way, even if he yearned to be by the vampire's side with every breath.

Setting a new blank canvas on his easel calmed him. Lewis loved the beginning of a piece. Anything could happen before he placed the first brushstroke.

With a press of his finger he turned on his stereo and let the driving beat wash through him. His mind focused on the image in his head, he crushed his favorite pigment and began to mix his colors.

Lost in the process of painting he jerked when his studio door opened and all five of his brothers sauntered in. Lewis stared at his siblings uncertain why he had so many visitors. He expected Tam to stop by, but to see all of them invading his space at once brought his territorial instincts to the forefront.

His studio.

A low growl built in his throat.

"Easy, Lewey Lewey," Paul said, raising his hands in defense. "We're just checking on you."

Lewis set down his brushes with a sigh. "Why?"

"Because you're going to be a father," Tam said, pushing his way through the wall of his taller brothers. "We thought you might be upset."

"No," Lewis denied, searching his brothers' concerned faces. "I'm not upset. Uncertain about what to do, but not upset. I want kids. I just didn't expect them so soon."

"You know we'll help," Mac promised.

"I know. I do." He had no doubt in his mind his brothers would step in and his parents, too. Lewis ran his fingers through his hair.

"Do you want to know about your babies?" Tam asked, perching on Lewis's drawing stool.

"Yeah." Lewis's hands shook with nerves.

He folded his arms and leaned against the wall to listen to his brother's information while trying to keep his emotions under control.

"Why didn't you go with them?" Mac asked. "If it were Amy, I would've made sure I was there to hold her hand."

"I needed to talk to John." No point in lying. "I knew Tam would take care of anything Kelly needed. We're not you and Amy, Mac. We're a one-night stand that ended with children."

"Are you sure you want them?" Mac asked.

It took Lewis a minute to figure out what Mac was talking about. "What? Of course I want them. How many are there?"

"Three like usual," Tam spoke up. "Two girls and one boy. One of the girls has signs of the hereditary abnormality."

Lewis's jaw dropped. "One of my baby girls is going to be a superwolf."

"Looks like it," Tam replied with a wide grin. "I'll take over her training.
