“So much for our distraction,” Lando said. He began running toward the docking bay, the girl keeping pace. The bounty hunter would be on them in no time, and who knew what would happen then.

Well, Lando knew exactly what the bounty hunter would do, but it was better not to think about it.

“I don’t suppose those are rocket boots?” Lando asked.

“No, mag-boots!” Rinetta said.

They weaved through the crowd, which had started to scatter like the klinnet when the first blaster shot rang out. Lando didn’t know if the security droids would even respond. If he was dead, Ne’eda would just take L3-37 and the Falcon and sell them for parts to cover his debt. She controlled everything on that moon, and she might prefer him dead.

Rinetta was falling behind, her breathing ragged, and Lando was nearly out of ideas when he saw the air trolley go by. It skimmed along the paths a few feet above the canals, giving visitors an aerial view of Neral’s moon.

“Hey, kid, if I throw you up there, do you think you can secure your boots to the bottom of that trolley?”

Rinetta looked up. “Not a chance.”

“Ah, well, it was a good plan.” Lando skidded to a stop and pulled out his blaster. Even though the Wookiee had searched him, he hadn’t looked under Lando’s shirt. Secured to the small of his back was a holdout blaster, a last resort Lando kept on hand for situations such as this.

Sticky situations.

Lando fired at the bounty hunter twice. The first shot caught the man in the leg, sending him to the ground. The second hit him in the wrist, causing him to drop his blaster.

“My regrets, friend!” Lando called. “But it would be very bad if you accidentally shot the princess. Please send Jeskian Veldar my greetings, and tell her I’ll settle up next time.”

Rinetta looked from Lando to the bounty hunter and back again. Lando grinned at the girl. “What?”

“Why didn’t you just shoot him in the first place?” she asked incredulously.

“Are you kidding? Of course I didn’t shoot first. Only an impulsive fool shoots first. There is always a better way to get things done. Well, until there isn’t.”

Now that they were no longer being shot at, Lando and Rinetta made their way to the docking bay at a more leisurely pace. Not too slowly, though. Ne’eda’s Stalwarts could be anywhere.

They were almost to the docking bay when Lando felt something hard in the small of his back. He stopped and turned around. Rinetta had a small blaster pressed against his spine.

“Really, Rinetta?” Lando said, not bothering to keep the exasperation out of his voice.

“You have to help me take the Solstice Globe to Livno III. Please. If you do I’ll give you this.” The girl thrust a bag at him, and Lando opened it to find a pile of credits.

“It’s two thousand credits. If you take me to Livno III that’s yours. Plus more. I promise. You’ve seen what my necklace can do. There’s nothing else like it in the galaxy.
