TWO BOATS were moored far apart from each other.

“It looks like someone was already here,” he whispered above Sean’s head as he watched two inflatable landing boats—not too different from their own—make their way to the cove beneath.

Two men emerged from each. They unloaded a heavy cooler from each boat.

“See, it’s just a picnic,” Sean whispered back.

“Not a picnic,” he whispered into Sean’s hair as he settled back down. “See the bulges? They’re armed.”

The guns were not obvious with the way the loose tropical shirts draped over the shorts of the men on the right. They looked to be in their late twenties and bore a striking family resemblance. Cousins, maybe, or even twins. He felt like he’d seen them before. Their dark skin glistened in the sun, and as they turned toward the other pair of men, a stray sunbeam reflected off their mirrored sunglasses.

The other two looked a bit older. Possibly Hispanic. The taller one wore a sailing cap with a long bill that shielded the sunglasses over his eyes. His body language spoke of dominance, and his gun was probably hidden in the small of his waist, under his formal-looking vest. His younger companion had his hair in a ponytail and wore a bright yellow shirt. There was something familiar about the way these men carried themselves. It was like a chain of command instead of a family.

Yellow Shirt looked up to the one in the hat for instructions. Asbjorn felt his back prickle and his breath deepen as his whole being tensed with red alert.

He was flung years back and thousands of miles away, except now he was weaponless. Plus he had a loved one to protect.

“Stay still. They are not nice people.” Asbjorn’s hiss was barely audible over the sharp whistling of the wind and the rolling waves that crashed against the beach.
