John felt himself being pulled down, through his bed and toward the floor. Many firm hands gripped his arms and legs and he struggled to cry out, to raise his head, but he couldn’t. A single heavy hand covered his entire face. He was defenseless, helpless to respond to the unknown but powerful threat that surrounded him. His downward movement suddenly stopped and he was hastily released. Completely out of his body, John stood and watched in amazement as Sarrif masterfully wielded a sword against his attackers. The head of the largest attacker, the one who had John’s head and had been leading the attack, was the first to experience Sarrif’s wrath. The demons head lay in the corner of the room, spinning slowly on its ear.

With the leader eliminated, Sarrif made short work of the remaining evil spirits. He moved through them quickly, in a blur, effortlessly dispatching them one after the other. No physical person could move as fast as Sarrif. It was as if the demons were standing still. Then, in a flash of awareness, John matched time with Sarrif’s and was able to watch his guardian move. He seemed to casually flick his sword wrist at a demon, and when sliced or impaled by the sword, the demon deatomized and was completely gone.

Even at matched speed, John had to closely watch Sarrif’s movements to catch the details. Sarrif gracefully swung the four-foot blade of silver light as if it was an extension of his arm, and he didn’t stop moving until the last of the demons was gone and turned to dust. Sarrif’s ballet of death lasted less than a few seconds, but in that time John saw enough detail to fully appreciate the man’s fine display of martial art. Every detail, every attack angle and thrust point, every step and turn of his body as he moved through to engage the demon host, was appreciated and absorbed into John’s mind. With a final flourish of the sword, Sarrif sheathed it and looked at John.

“Nice work, Sarrif,” said John.

Sarrif bowed and smiled. “Yes, nothing like a little combat to wake you up. Are you OK?”

“Yes, I’m fine - thanks to you. I was a little startled at first. I wasn’t sure what was going on. I was being pulled down, but then I was suddenly released. That’s when I saw the leader’s head spinning in the corner,” answered John. “Why didn’t the head disappear with the rest of him?” asked John, as he walked to the corner and tapped the head with his toe.

“They released you when I removed his head.” Sarrif moved next to John and said, “It was their leader. It’s always the quickest way to dissolve an attack . . . eliminate the leader and the rest are momentarily frozen. I thought we’d send the head to the enemy camp as a sign and a warning,” finished Sarrif.

“Do they really die when you kill them?” asked John.

“A true death, even a second death for some, will come, but it not yet the time for such as that.
