Later on that night, Arabelle traversed through the streets of Windfell, heading toward the Post House with their letter to Ember clutched in her hand.

When Derek had first suggested writing to Ember, her first reaction had been to protest. This assignment was supposed to help her prove to her father that she was serious about her duties and that she was a suitable candidate for joining the Crown Guard. She knew that sending word to Ember would only result in them being pulled from the assignment and other Guardians being sent in to take over.

She rounded a corner, and the Post House came into sight. It was a slim, triple storey building made of the same featureless, grey brick as the rest of the town. She could see candlelight glowing through the front window on the first floor, and heard the muted sound of ravens cawing and clucking from inside. She was standing before the door and about to enter when she paused.

Arabelle looked down at the letter in her hand, sealed up in a crisp, white envelope, and an idea came unbidden into her head. What if she simply . . . didn't send the letter?

She could throw the letter away into the street where the wind would carry it away or the snow would soak it through until it was a soggy, illegible mess. She could turn around, walk back the way she had come and tell the others that she'd sent the letter and they'd never know any better.

It was an incredibly dishonourable thought, one that Arabelle was sure her father would scold her for if he knew. But if doing so would allow her to complete the assignment the way she wanted to and prove to her father that she was ready to take on the responsibility of a Crown Guard, then shouldn't she?

She looked to the door of the Post House and back down at the envelope.

Arabelle made her decision.
