Chapter 8
No sooner had Laurie Ann hung up from talking to Kurt than her phone rang again, and it was Jeremy. âCan I stay here at Frankâs for dinner?â
âI thought that was a given,â she said with a note of humor.
âWell, I donât want to interrupt your dinner date,â he said in a mocking tone.
âNot a problem,â she said easily. âKurt just called, and heâs managed to locate the dog, but now heâs at a delicate point where he doesnât want to leave her alone, and he has to gain her trust in order to get a leash on her.â
âHe found her,â her sonâs voice rose enthusiastically. âOh, wow, thatâs awesome.â
âIt certainly is,â she said with a smile. âIf he is still coming for a barbecue tomorrow, heâll try and bring the dog too.â
âThatâd be great,â he said. âSo can I stay overnight tomorrow too?â
She groaned. âGive you an inch, and youâre always trying to take a mile.â
âHey, Mom. I havenât stayed over in quite a while. You know that.â
âI know,â she said, âOkay. Yes, for tonight. Yes, even for tomorrow night. But be home for the barbecue tomorrow.â
âWill do.â
He spoke in that completely casual tone of voice, as if tomorrowâs barbecue and spending time with his newfound father was absolutely of no consequence. She didnât think he felt that way, but she suspected it was his way of handling the stress and the heavy emotions. Or maybe she was the one completely out to lunch. She didnât know, but she was happy with it all. She set her phone down, when her sister called. Laurie Ann groaned.
âWow,â her sister said, in that brittle tone of hers. âNormally youâre happy to hear from me.â
âOf course I am,â she said, desperately trying to pull back her tone of voice. âIâve just gotten off the phone from multiple phone calls, so it was one of those Darn, now who else? kind of moments.â
âAh,â she said, âI figured you were still upset at me over Kurt.â
âNope, not at all,â she said. âYouâre entitled to your opinion.â
âAnd youâll do what you want regardless, right?â
âWell, I have to,â she said. âOtherwise, it isnât my opinion or my choice, is it?â
Her sister groaned. âDoes that mean youâre seeing him?â
âWell, let me put it this way. He knows about Jeremy, and Jeremy knows about him.â
A shocked silence was on the other end before her sister exploded. âWhat? You told them? Why would you do that?â
âBecause I felt that was the fair thing to do,â she said. âI know you donât understand, but I wonât live in fear that either one of them will find out later from someone other than me and then be mad at me.â
âWell, of course, they both could be mad at you,â she said. âThatâs how the world runs.â
âIt doesnât have to,â she said. âBesides, they both know, and theyâre both coming over for barbecue tomorrow.â
âWhereâs Jeremy now?â
Rolling her eyes, she quickly rephrased her answer. âJeremyâs staying over at Frankâs house for the night.
