When I finally get back to my room, I close the door behind me and then wearily lean against it. I might not have a concussion, but my head hurts nonetheless, especially with all that stupidity going on out there . . .

Glancing up, I notice that my room is neat again. Robbie must have done it when not getting worked up about imaginary women.

I almost smile.

Until I wonder if it was just a good excuse to search my stuff.

Frowning now, I hurry to the crack in the wall I hid the receiver for the bugs I’d put in Robbie’s and Garret’s rooms. Thankfully, it’s still there.

I breathe a sigh of relief and turn it back on just in case something more interesting than snoring and whimpering is going on.

But then I decide better than that and rewind it some, in case I missed something interesting.

All I get is static.

So, he did find my receiver. Or at least someone did. Not that it could have been anyone other than Robbie, being that the others were with me the whole day.

Then again, Garret did leave while I was being checked out at the hospital, to take a phone call. From Robbie? Are they working together?

That is, besides what we’re all working together on. All I have in the way of suspicion that either are anything but what they say they are come from the words of an even more suspicious woman.

And a deleted receiver.

Frowning, I slide the device into my pocket before going to the window to attach one of the new purchases to it: a lock. To keep out outside intruders— real intruders.

Then again, I know the pink-haired woman can vanish almost into thin air. Could this be her? Or someone like her? Why or how they’re doing it, I have no idea, but it would explain why both Robbie and Garret saw her.

It would also make sense if Robbie’s just reaping the consequences of watching all those late-night shows and Garret’s going along with it to make fun of him.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

I go to the door and open it.

Amelia is standing outside looking guilty.

“Amelia, what is it?”

She runs a hand through her hair and leans against the door frame. “You won the bet. Yesterday, actually.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean I stole Mr. Tyson’s watch for no good reason. I just got one of those urges and—”

“And then you returned it. I know.”

She looks up. “You knew?”

I shrug. I also know that I had to steal something— tied to the job, of course— but then got to return it, so I really have no problem with her doing it.

“Still,” she adds, “you won. You choose your prize.”

I look her up and down. Then I shake my head to clear my mind of such thoughts. “Between the two of us, we both knew about what you did. But only you were honest about it, so I think you’re the one who won the bet.”

She stares at me, confused.

“You’re really going to make me have to say it?” I sigh.
