The phone rang. âWake up, prick,â Mikael said. It was 2 p.m.
âHowâd you know I was sleeping?â Kraj said, suspicious. He parted the curtains to see if anyone was spying on him. All he saw was the Metzgerâs furniture being loaded into a yellow Penske truck.
âYou were up all night. What else would you be doing?â It was a good point, Kraj thought.
âWhat do you want, Mikael?â
âUh, Ricky wanted me to call you. There may be some heat headed your way.â
âFrom NY, eh? I already figured that out.â
âYouâre a smart boy. Grab your girl and go.â
âWhere to go?â Kraj said.
âI donât know. Go hide somewhere for a couple weeks. Ricky gave you enough money to float you for a while.â The envelope. Kraj had forgotten it. He dug in his pocket and got the thing. It felt heavier than heâd remembered.
âHold on,â Kraj said. He put the phone down and ripped open the envelope. He counted quickly, even though the bills were still banded. Ten thousand dollars. He blew out his breath.
âHow am I supposed to live on this?â Kraj said. Squeeze him, Kraj thought.
âFor at least a month,â Mikael said. So Mikael knew how much was in it. Kraj felt the itch of pursuit. Every moment spent talking seemed like a goombah getting closer to him, or worse, to Cami.
âFine,â Kraj said. âIâll goââ
âNo more. I donât want to know,â Mikael said. âJust get the fuck out.â Kraj hung up the phone. He speed-dialed Cami, who was working until five, and left a message for her to come immediately. He pulled a duffel bag out from under the bed. Sawed-off 12 gauge. Walther .380. His Colt Python .357. An Airweight .38 for Cami. He loaded them all, then wrapped a box of ammunition each in a couple sweatshirts, and added them to the bag. T-shirts, underwear, jeans, a pair of khaki shorts, five shirts, a package of socks. Boots and sneakers. Deodorant. Toothbrush. He threw all of Camiâs clothes into two suitcases and locked them. It was nearly three thirty. He knew sometimes the fast food business really kicked up in the afternoon, but why hadnât Cami checked her messages?
