Chapter 8

Panic overrides the awe gripping my insides. One moment she stood in Miguel’s arms with a knife to her throat, the next she burst into a creature too beautiful to behold and soared upward with the male’s throat in her grasp.

Now she lies limp in the back seat of my truck, wrapped in both Amaru’s coat and his arms.

Maybe that’s why I brought them here. I’ve never had guests, but the sight of her in his lap and the knowledge of her wearing his scent fills me with both anger and trepidation. Anger because I want my pheromones to be the first thing she smells when she wakes and trepidation because she may choose Amaru as her only alpha.

My heart pounds with panic. Every fiber of my being yearns for her.

She made me see the folly of my ways. Indoctrinated in Saint Nick’s propaganda that omegas must be controlled and used, I believed they held too much power for the good of society.

But seeing Rey in her true form broke everything my leader instilled in me.

Growing up in the North Pole, I only ever saw broken omegas. With their spirits malnourished and their hearts gutted, the power they offered was skewed. Muted.

Rey, as an angel and an omega, exposed me for the coward I am. I don’t need a harem. Subduing her would be wrong.

My soul quails at the thought.

I want her light as my own, but not because I crushed her will and forced her to accept me as her own.

My brow twitches as I argue with myself. My alpha instincts still demand I claim her, own her, no matter what it takes.

But my soul longs for a meaningful connection with hers. No longer do I want to wield her like a weapon.

Unable to subdue the emotions battering me, I pull into the driveway, put the truck in park, and stare over the hood for a moment.

Heat waves warp the view along the bottom of the windshield as my engine pings. I slide out of the truck, ignoring the pain in my thigh and the blood seeping down my pants, and hurry around the front of the truck. When I open the door and offer to take Rey from Amaru, he doesn’t budge.

Worry spears through me. I grind my teeth and step back. He exits the truck with the grace of a predator.

I turn away, angered at my own show of weakness.

Despite being an admirable foe and useful partner, the demon alpha won’t take what’s mine. I grit my teeth and force my gait even despite the bullet holes in my thigh. Unlocking my front door, I open it wide and stalk inside, checking every room before snatching the first aid supplies from both the bathroom and the kitchen.

Amaru sits on the couch with our omega on his lap.

Ours?

I growl. Mine.

The lines beside his eyes deepen, but otherwise, his expression doesn’t change. The asshole has a solid poker face.

A gash along his cheekbone paints the bottom right half of his face crimson, but otherwise he shows no signs of injury.
