CHAPTER SIX

WHEN she emerged from the cloakroom ten minutes later clad in a beautifully cut black swimming-costume, her hair looped into a high ponytail and her face washed clean of any trace of tears, Lorne found Francisco waiting for her in the hall, calm, contained and seemingly perfectly relaxed. But she had been expecting it this time and the face that met his reflected his coolness.

‘Ready?’ The black eyes flicked over her lazily, their expression hidden behind congenial warmth.

‘Yes.’ She smiled back carefully. He was still dressed in the jeans and black silk shirt he had driven down in and she felt embarrassingly naked in the silky scrap of expensive material from his sister’s amazing wardrobe.

The sand was hot beneath her feet as they left the house and immediately the bright sun roasted her skin with its powerful warmth as they wandered down to the water’s edge. ‘Come on.’ As he led her along the shoreline he took her hand in a casual gesture that she knew meant nothing but had her toes curling into the powdery sand with a tiny thrill of pleasure. ‘There is a small inlet a little way ahead with a wonderfully shallow slope into the water. The sea is always warm at that point so the shock of the deeper water isn’t so bad.’ He looked down at her, his eyes crinkled against the sun.

Part of her, a tiny separate part, was aware of the incongruity of the fact that here she was, ordinary little Lorne Wilson, wandering along a picture-postcard beach with one of the most handsomely enigmatic men she had ever seen in her life, and that included the Hollywood stars on the silver screen, when just a few weeks ago she had been slaving over her finals and unable to imagine a life that didn’t include relentless study and persistent hard work.

Perhaps that was where she’d gone wrong, she thought suddenly. Maybe if she could look on this as a brief glimpse of how the other half lived, a pleasant interlude that would soon be forgotten once she was back in her own world, it wouldn’t matter so much what he said or did. He had intimated virtually the same thing after all when he had suggested the sightseeing to improve the impression of his land she would take home with her. None of this mattered, not really... But it did, dammit, it did.

She felt the dark gaze on her face and glanced up to meet it. ‘Somehow Catalina never looked like that in this swimming-costume,’ he said slowly as the heat in his eyes became mirrored in her cheeks.

‘Didn’t she?’ He had stopped and was looking down at her with glittering black eyes. ‘Well, perhaps it’s just because she’s your sis——’

As his head lowered to hers her lips quivered and opened in mesmerised expectation, and her name was a thick groan on his mouth as he pulled her into his hard bulk. ‘Lorne...’ He traced the outline of her lips, his tongue sensuous against their soft fullness.
