This fashion event looks like every other fashion event I’ve ever been to in the Hamptons.

Set in some perfectly manicured backyard of some millionaire with a ridiculously sickening shaker-sided mansion, people milling around in all-white linen outfits, rosé by the gallon, and fresh fish at any buffet table or a hors d’oeuvres passer walking around.

The lawn is doused in purple and pink hydrangeas, white roses, and landscaping that probably cost more than my rent for the entire year. The white leather catwalk perched like a stage running down the lawn is both classy and edgy, and I think if anyone spills a drink on it, all of the models will go flying. The line, from some designer I’ve never heard of, is resort wear. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but the dresses, matching sets, and coverups are elegant and timeless. I wouldn’t mind going home with one, but they’re probably way over my price limit, and I’ve definitely splurged as I’ve gotten older.

All in all, I don’t mind being here, but this is probably my least favorite part of my job. I’m a writer, a researcher, someone who loves talking with interview subjects to suss out the kernel of wisdom or truth. Networking and doing social media captions about outfits and fancy people by the beach, not so much. But my boss allowed me to work from the Hamptons this summer and this is the trade-off, so here I am.

“Some of these women look like hyenas,” Campbell leans over and whispers in my ear.

I chuckle, unable to hold back the laugh as a particularly enthusiastic plastic surgeon nightmare passes us. “You live in Manhattan, you have to have seen these people or someone like them.”

He shrugs. “I guess, but this is a whole other level. I mean, what are these women doing to their faces?” He cringes.

“I’m not opposed to plastic surgery, but this is next level, you’re right. I saw a woman who had made her nose so skinny, I wondered how she was breathing. I guess if you have money, you really can do whatever you want with it.”

“I just prefer the natural beauty of a woman. None of this plastic shit. Seriously, most of the time guys don’t even notice what you think is wrong with you. Which, in your case, is nothing.”

I roll my eyes. “I can’t tell which is more of a line or a lie, you saying you like natural beauty or insinuating that I have zero flaws.”

“I am your fake boyfriend, remember? I’m here to compliment and cajole.” He winks, and my belly flutters.

My fake boyfriend looks too good to be giving me compliments. A girl could get the wrong idea, which is why I put those rules in place. But damn, does he look like sex on a platter tonight. He’s in blue linen pants and a white button-up shirt, and true to his word, he’s left enough buttons undone that his chest hair is peaking out. It’s sinfully sexy, and the smattering of a dozen or so tattoos between his two arms could be my undoing.
