Chapter Seven
“What are you doing in here?” Dan asked from the kitchen doorway.
Jon dropped the cloth he’d been using to wipe down the worktop into the sink, and dried off his damp hands on the seat of his trousers. “Just squaring up a bit. Aidan all settled in?” His jovial tone sounded hollow, even to his own ears.
“Not a lot of settling to do,” Dan replied, mouth pulling down at the corners. “Everything he has in the world seems to be in those two bags.”
The words landed like blows on Jon’s heart, and a knot of emotion formed in his throat. “Yeah, uh, I don’t think he’s had it easy for a while.”
“Sounds like someone else I know,” Dan stage-whispered. He smiled, picked up a half-full bottle of wine and held it out to Jon. “He could probably use a little company right now. Lorenzo and I are heading off to bed.”
Jon hesitated.
“You’re scared,” Dan stated, his voice free of any judgment or accusation.
Sighing, Jon leaned back against the countertop and rubbed a hand across his face. The kitchen descended into silence, broken only when Dan moved to stand in front of his friend.
“I get it, I really do,” Dan said. “Iain fucked with your head as well as your heart. It’s no surprise that you’re afraid to get back on the horse.”
Jon closed his eyes against the sting of unshed tears. “Bloody pathetic.”
“Stop being so damned hard on yourself, man.” Dan reached over and gave Jon’s shoulder a squeeze. “I don’t have any pathetic friends, and if you were that bad, Aidan’s eyes wouldn’t light up every time he sees you.”
A weak laugh escaped Jon. He grabbed the bottle and gave his friend a gentle shove. “Go to bed, and keep the noise down, yeah? You’ve got company.”
Dan winked suggestively and left the room, an exaggerated swagger to his walk. Jon couldn’t help laughing, but his humor faded when he was, once again, alone. His fingers tightened around the neck of the wine bottle until his knuckles protested. Something was blooming in his stomach, something vaguely familiar and entirely unexpected. Hope. A small flicker, but bright enough to banish the shadows.
He sucked in a deep breath, let his head tip forwards until his chin was resting on his chest and, curiously lightheaded, closed his eyes as the room started to pitch and dip around him.
“Are you all right?”
Softly spoken though the question was, Jon still jumped. His head snapped up and his eyes flew open to find Aidan standing before him, concern etched in the lines on his forehead. Jon felt his mouth begin to curve in a smile over which he seemed to have no control. His heart flipped with fondness when Aidan’s cheeks colored.
“I’d love to take you on a date,” Jon said, grinning now as a wave of happiness washed over him. God, he hadn’t felt this free in…too damn long. Yes, Iain had hurt him, but Jon realized that he wasn’t nearly as broken as he’d thought.
