The Kiss

It was a Saturday, nearly a month after I had arrived in Whispering Oaks. The afternoon rush at the Curious Cup was over—ten people in total—and I was wiping down the front counter when Jacob walked in.

He was dressed in cutoffs, a white shirt, and flip-flops. Not exactly an Armani poster boy, but still cute enough to make my heart do a cartwheel. His Mohawk was straight up and jet-black, a perfect complement to his blue eyes.

I’m gushing, right?

“Hey, you,” he said, closing the door behind him.

“What’s up?” I dropped the damp rag and leaned on the counter.

As usual, Jacob stood in place for a few seconds and just stared at me. It was a habit of his I’d noticed. He did it all the time—in his car, at the lake, walking down Main Street. I assumed it was a way for him to collect his thoughts before speaking, and he always had a lot to say.

We were still just friends, but there was a vibe between us that screamed attraction. I joked with him more than I did with any of the other guys I’d met in town, and he joked with me more than he did with the other girls. Like when I asked him if he was ever going to show me the tattoo on his chest, or when he asked me if I wanted to go skinny-dipping in the lake. Funny. Okay, maybe a little trashy. But the banter worked. I think we both would have preferred a nice long kiss, but for some reason it hadn’t happened yet, and I wasn’t going to rush it.

“Want some coffee?” I asked him, reaching for the pot.

“Eh, not really. Maybe some of that herbal tea infusion stuff Finny keeps in those magic jars instead?” He came to the counter and sat down.

“Which magic infusion tea? The one that turns you into a wolf or the one that turns you into a bird?”

He feigned indecision, arching his eyebrows and cupping a hand over his chin. “Hmmm. Better make it a wolf. In case I need to run through the woods for food tonight.”

“Now, there’s a coincidence,” I said, loading herbs into a cup. “I was planning on doing the same thing tonight.”

“Awesome! You feel like hunting deer or elk?”

I added a spoonful of sugar to the peppermint-lavender tea, gave it a stir, then set the cup down in front of Jacob.

He took a sip. “Amazing,” he said. “You know just how I like my tea. Sweet tea from a sweet girl. Now, this is what I call a nice afternoon.”

See what I mean? I felt my cheeks starting to blush.

Jacob reached into the pocket of his shorts and pulled out a crinkled white envelope. “I wanted to bring you this,” he said. “I thought you’d find it interesting.”

“What is it?”

He opened the envelope and yanked out several folded sheets of paper. “These are articles on Mattie Dembrook and Eamon Whitfield, clips from the Whispering Oaks Gazette from over the years.
