CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Dylan lurched out of the lobby of the Kensington Roof Gardens onto Kensington High Street, singing a medley of Paper Bandits songs at the top of her lungs. It was four in the morning. One of her sandals was dragging off her foot and a damp wind whipped up, tangling her hair over her eyes.

“Come on, Jassie, dance with me!” Dylan hiccuped. She propelled herself toward Jasper, stumbled, and knocked them both backward into the side of the building, where Tom Huntleigh and Bella Scott were sucking each other’s faces off.

“Afterparty!” shouted George Demetrios, charging out of the lobby with Bathsheba Fortnum, Tally, Rando, and Sonia in tow.

“Afterparty? Where?” Tally slurred.

“At Jamie Darlington’s. His parents are in Switzerland. You wait here, I’ll text you the address.” George jumped into a waiting black cab with Bathsheba, who was clearly his project for the night, and winked luridly at his friends. “Later, babies.”

“Wait!” Dylan called, trying to run after the taxi. “I wan go affapary too.”

Jasper caught her hand. “No way are you going to the afterparty,” he laughed. “You can hardly walk. Look, here’s another cab. I’m taking you home.”

“No fun,” Dylan complained, lolling her head back and forth as Jasper helped her onto the seat. Then, stumbling round, she waved both hands at Tally, Sonia, and Rando out the window. “Bye-bye, guys!”

“Ugh.” Sonia rolled her eyes.

“Wow,” Tally said, turning to Rando. “Jasper likes Dylan for real, doesn’t he? I’ve never heard of him making sure a date gets home. Especially a drunk date. He’s usually trying to take advantage and get some.”

Sonia snorted. “Oh, come on, Tals, don’t be so naive. Of course he doesn’t like Dylan. He’s totally gonna jump her in the cab and then he’ll ignore her for the rest of her life.”

“Optimistic, aren’t you?” Rando said. “Actually, I reckon Tally’s right—Jasper seems well into Dylan. You should have seen him getting ready to meet her tonight; it was like being backstage at a bloody fashion show. I reckon he genuinely wants to go out with her.”

“Yeah, right,” Sonia sniffed. “You mean he genuinely wants to go out with her tits. Anyway, he can’t go out with her, ’cause she’s leaving. He clearly knows that and is taking advantage of a quick shag. Shit!” She gaped at her watch. “I didn’t realize how late it was! How am I supposed to look hot for my date with Sebbie tomorrow if I don’t get my beauty sleep? What if I get a wrinkle and he doesn’t fancy me? Help, Tally! Why didn’t I think of that earlier? Oh my god, oh my god!”

Ignoring her, Tally plucked Rando’s sleeve. “Coming?” she asked coyly as a taxi pulled up. “You and I can drop Sonia off and then head to Jamie’s afterparty.”

“Oh . . . I don’t—”

“Go on!” Tally wheedled. “It’ll be so fun.”

“But . . .” Rando shifted his feet. “How about Alice? Shouldn’t we wait for her?”

“Oh my god, good point,” Sonia exclaimed, thrusting her head out the window.
