Amy was about to turn the key in the ignition when the Mission: Impossible theme song filled the car. She retrieved her phone from a jacket pocket. "Hey, Maggie," she said, then listened as Maggie conveyed the latest findings. While listening, Amy saw Frank sway gently in his seat, his skin seemingly damp.
Frank leaned back and closed his eyes.
"Thank you," Amy said, then hung up. "You're shaking! Did the dog scare you, or was the run too much?"
Frank shook his head. "What did Maggie say?"
"They ran a boot print they lifted from the scene. They're not sure about the brand yet, but it's a size fourteen."
"So?" Frank said.
"They also got the results back from the hairs they found next to the boot prints."
"Someone in the database?" Frank said, opening his eyes.
Amy nodded. "You won't believe it."
"What?"
"It's someone you already know."
"What?"
Amy nodded again. "William Forrester."
"William Forrester?" Frank repeated. Then: "William Forrester from JSG? The CFO from the company who's having Rebecca followed?"
"The one and only," Amy said.
"How is that possible?"
Amy shrugged.
Frank looked out the front windscreen, not saying anything for a while. When he finally did speak, his voice was low and measured. "Rebecca told me that William Forrester was involved in some bar brawl years back."
"Really?"
Frank nodded. "Apparently he must have been found guilty, hence his DNA already in the database."
"Makes sense," Amy said.
Frank looked out into the darkness for a while, then slapped himself on the forehead, keeping his hand there.
"What?"
"And since he now works for JSG, the same company that's currently following Rebecca, what does that tell you about the company?"
Amy turned to Frank, shrugged. "Not sure where you're going with this. Are you okay? Why are you sweating? Do you need the AC on?"
Frank didn't reply. He ran a hand over his face, removed it, then wiped it on his shorts.
Amy thought he looked pale, and she was beginning to worry when Frank finally spoke again.
"Rebecca told me that William was involved in some bar brawl years back," he repeated.
"Okay," Amy said. "But if you're referring to an assault and battery conviction, that's still a far cry from committing murder."
Frank shook his head. "I'm thinking about JSG," he said. "When did William start working for them?"
Amy looked out her window, mentally accessing the files she'd printed for him. She looked back at Frank. "Sometime after Carl's death, so maximum five years ago?"
"Exactly," Frank said. "Meaning that William Forrester would have already had a criminal record when they hired him."
"So?"
"You think a person with a criminal record would be able to get a job in a security firm?"
Amy's eyes grew large. "Of course not."
"Exactly," Frank said. "JSG must be a front, which means they're all crooks, hiding illegal activities behind the legal facade of a security firm."
"Not a bad idea, driving around selling drugs and then deducting the company miles from their annual tax bill," Amy said. "Wouldn't surprise me if they have asset depreciation schedules on everything they own."
Frank ran a hand over his face again. "Plus, no one would ever question why they drive around at all hours of the night," he said.
