Chapter Fifteen:
The Fence and The Showers
"Okay, you guys, here's the plan," Stacy said as they stood outside the entrance to the Lazy River, their swimsuits still dripping. "We'll go back up the hill to the start of the Ragin' Rivers. Zack, you're the loudest, so you yell for Brad every, oh I don't know, let's say thirty seconds."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. What do you mean I'm the loudest? You callin' me a loud-mouth?" he joked in a voice loud enough to echo back through the trees.
"A loud job for a loud mouth," she fired back at him. "Cyndi, you've got the best hearing so you listen for him, okay? If you hear anything, and I mean anything at all, you tell us and we'll all go check it out."
"Right," Cyndi said, feeling a little flattered that Stacy thought she was the best at something.
"I'll keep my eyes open for any little signs of him," Stacy continued. "You guys keep your eyes open too, but I'll pay especially close attention to the visual details. You guys got it?"
"You got it, chief!" Zack said, saluting her.
"Zack, come on. Be serious for once," Stacy sighed. "Brad might be hurt and I don't want you missing anything because of stupid jokes."
"You're right, sorry," he said, his voice dropping back to a serious, resigned tone.
So it was back up the slope again for the three runaways. They trudged uphill, keeping their eyes peeled on the grass and shrubs for any sign of Brad; a torn piece of his swimsuit, a Twinkie wrapper, anything. Zack bellowed out Brad's name every thirty seconds, his voice echoing back and scaring flocks of birds out of the trees. Cyndi listened hard for a slight whimper, a tiny gasp, or a rustle of clothes in the bushes. All she heard were their own footsteps, Zack's echoing cries, and the birds. Her imagination left her alone and didn't play any tricks on her. Except for their own noises, the place remained eerily silent.
Their pace was slow and methodical, but they saw no sign of Brad. Stacy impatiently asked, "You guys see anything yet?"
"Nada," Zack replied. Cyndi shook her head.
Stacy suppressed the urge to speed up. She half expected Brad to jump out and yell Boo any minute now. They would all hit him and scold him, then they could all go home. She also half expected to find him off in the woods, dead, bloody, and pale white, with a cloud of flies that incessantly landed on his glazed, open eyes. She told herself that idea was ridiculous, but the image of it kept creeping back into her mind like a stubborn weed.
After twenty minutes of thoroughly searching the path and the surrounding woods, they made it to the east entrance of the Ragin' Rivers again.
"HEY BRAAAAD!" Zack yelled out louder than any of his previous calls. His voice was beginning to sound hoarse. They all listened for any sound. "God! Where the fuck is he?!" Zack said clenching his fists in frustration.
