Chapter 20

Thursday 10 May, 11:00 a.m.

The day hadn’t gotten any better for Eliot after he and Cooper returned to the station. Patrol had attempted to serve Anthony Amato with Zenyia’s restraining order, but they hadn’t been able to locate him at his home the previous evening or at his place of employment this morning.

Given Amato’s penchant for violence and access to Zenyia, he and Coop had taken a hard look at Amato for Donaldson’s murder. In addition to lacking a motive, Amato had an alibi. He’d been out drinking with friends and had ended up staying the night on one’s sofa.

Amato may not be their killer but that didn’t mean he wasn’t dangerous. Eliot was growing worried that Amato was lying low in an attempt to catch Zenyia or Eve in an unguarded moment. He was going to do everything in his power to make sure that didn’t happen, but the Donaldson case had to take precedence.

Eliot read through the Donaldson case file for a fourth time looking for anything he may have missed the first three times. He ignored the chime from his computer indicating the arrival of a new email.

A moment later Cooper said, ‘We just got the GPS data from Donaldson’s phone.’

Eliot set the file he’d been reading aside but a knock on the office door stopped him before he opened the email. ‘Kimura wants us in the conference room. Now,’ Gregory said before walking away.

‘She’s starting to get on my nerves.’ Cooper stood, scowling.

‘Starting to?’ Gregory’s attitude was the last thing Eliot was in the mood for at the moment.

He and Cooper joined Kimura, Gregory, and Mehta in the conference room.

‘Where are we with the Donaldson case?’ Kimura barked the moment everyone settled into a seat.

Eliot held his breath, expecting to hear Cooper report Zenyia’s refusal to answer their questions this morning, followed by the pontification of the rest of the team about how guilty it made her appear.

‘We got Donaldson’s GPS information seconds before coming in for this meeting. We’ll run it down today,’ Cooper said.

‘You already know Donaldson received a call from Walter Pattinson, a known dealer, who was found yesterday with one shot to the forehead like Donaldson,’ Eliot added. ‘We’ve found no connection between Walter and Zenyia Washington. But Donaldson’s phone records show he also called Walter last month when he was in D.C.’

‘Great. So one of the most powerful banking executives in the country was a regular client of a low-life drug dealer.’ Kimura sighed.

Eliot shrugged. ‘It looks that way.’

Kimura narrowed his eyes at the detectives. ‘The powers that be are all over me to make an arrest in this case.’

Cooper cast him a sidelong glance, nodding in Kimura’s direction.

Eliot cleared his throat. ‘Sir, there’s something else we should all be aware of. Zenyia Washington’s biological father is Judge Avery Haynes.’

Mehta whistled and Gregory’s eyes widened to comical proportions.

Kimora swore. ‘Why the hell am I just finding out about this?’

‘Ms. Washington and her father don’t have a relationship,’ Eliot explained. ‘After her mother died, her father paid for her to go to a private music boarding school.
