Cal tried to speak and gagged instead.

“Are you okay? You don’t look too well,” Deerborn commented. It could have been concern in his voice, or it could have been suspicion.

Cal forced himself to take a breath, to calm himself down. It was like he was crying out his guilt. He had to chill, level out, stop acting so nervous. But he couldn’t. So there was only one thing to do. He took a few more deep breaths and then spoke, concentrating totally on keeping his voice steady and audible.

“I have this thing,” he said. “I freeze up around strangers. I can’t talk. To them. Sorry.”
