Chapter 16
It was almost half past three in the morning when she let herself into the flat. Lucas was a heavy sleeper, but she crept in quietly anyway, taking a fresh set of clothes from the wardrobe, and her make-up bag from the dressing table. She had a quick shower, but managed to drop the shampoo, which clattered into the tray with an astonishing bang.
Fuck.
She climbed out. Hopefully he hadnât stirred. She was drying herself when the door opened, and Lucas walked through, squinting into the harsh light. He pulled up the toilet seat and started pissing.
âWhat time is it?â he asked, bleary-eyed.
âLate,â said Jo.
He registered her clothing hanging from the drying rail.
âAre you heading back out?â
âWorking a case,â she said.
He finished, and went to the sink. âHave you slept?â
âNot yet.â
As he was drying his hands, he said, âAre you going to tell me whatâs wrong?â
âNothingâs wrong.â
âReally? Not coming over the other night, being weird at lunch. Running off again. Itâs like youâre avoiding me.â
âI canât just drop everything. My jobâs more important than a lunch.â
âHey, I know that. But I donât think this is just your job.â
She felt silly being naked while she argued, so put on her bra even though she was still a bit damp. She continued to dress, with him standing there. As she reached for her trousers, he put his hand on them.
âTalk to me, for Godâs sake.â
She snatched the trousers away. âFine. I came to the college, Lucas,â she said. âTwo days ago, when we had the leak. Spoke to Bob. He didnât seem to think youâd been there that morning.â
âYou were checking up on me?â he said.
âI was trying to find you,â she said.
She could barely read his face in the half light. Heâd been caught lying, and he wasnât coming up with any excuses. With each second that passed, she felt more detached from the scene unfolding as she shrank into her shell. Self-preservation, Josephine.
âItâs not what you think,â he said.
âIsnât it? I deal with liars every day. Everyone has their reasons. Whatâs yours?â
When he didnât answer, she left the bathroom. Sheâd not been planning to walk out, but she found herself grabbing an overnight bag. Stuffing clothes in. Focus, Jo. Be dignified.
Lucas entered the room.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â
âWhat does it look like?â
He came to her, and moved the bag aside. âJo, listen, Iâm sorry â I shouldnât have lied, but let me explain.â
âJust leave me alone,â she said.
A fleeting expression sheâd never seen before crossed his features. âAt least hear me out.â
âIâve really got to get to work,â she said.
âI wasnât at the college, youâre right. I was at the travel agentâs.â
âPardon?â
âThe specialist winter sports place, out in Summertown. Iâve used them before.â She let him continue. âI know youâve been wanting to go away, and well, you said you hadnât skied before. I wanted somewhere we could go together. And something flexible, because well ⦠your job. I talked to Heidi â¦â
âYou what?â
âSure. I wanted it to be a surprise.
