By midnight, Guy was going out of his mind with the urge to drink. He was even considering going door to door in hopes that one of the guests had alcohol they’d sell him.

“Fuck!” Guy picked up his phone and stared at his contacts. He only had a few numbers programmed in, so it didn’t take long to find what he needed. He pressed the cell to his ear and prayed that the person on the other end of the call would be able to help him.

“This is Ed,” Guy’s AA sponsor answered.

“It’s Guy. I need your help.”

“What’s going on?” Ed asked. His voice was gruff and lazy with sleep, but like he’d told Guy on the first day they’d met, he was ready to help no matter the time.

“Shane told me earlier that he was the reason I was in my car the night of the accident. Evidently, he and I got in a fight. I pushed him. He left. I must’ve felt bad about it and gone after him,” Guy said.

“Good. I’m glad you’re finally able to fill in the blanks. You’ve told me a couple times how much it bothered you that you couldn’t remember.”

“Yeah,” Guy agreed. “Unfortunately, I also learned that the reason Shane showed up at the hospital was because he felt guilty.”

“And?” Ed prompted when Guy didn’t continue.

“And?” Guy couldn’t believe that Ed wasn’t as upset as he was. “Shane didn’t sit by my bedside because he cared about me. He did it because he felt guilty.”

Ed chuckled. “Have you ever sat in one of those damn hospital chairs? Shane may have gone to the hospital out of shame or guilt for the part he played in the wreck, but I guarantee that’s not the reason he stayed all those weeks.”

Guy thought of all Shane had done for him. He supposed it was possible, but it still didn’t make sense to him. “If that’s the case, why didn’t he tell me sooner? He knows how much the events of that night have plagued me. Why would he keep something like that to himself if he genuinely cared?”

“I don’t know. Maybe Shane was afraid you’d react just as you have. All I know of him is what you’ve told me, but it sounds to me like he’s done everything in his power to keep you sober while he works his ass off to rebuild the Tall Pines.”

Guy considered the dark circles he’d seen under Shane’s eyes lately. Shit. Until that day, Guy had done nothing to help Shane, and even during the meeting with Erico, he’d been so focused on his leg injury that he’d done nothing other than sit there. He thought of why he’d started drinking in the first place and why he’d wanted a drink after his fight with Shane. “I drink to forget. Not because I enjoy it.”

“Unfortunately, every alcoholic has a reason to drink. It sounds like instead of trying to forget what happened with your trainer, you should either fight back or come to peace with what he did,” Ed pointed out.
