Chapter Twenty

They drove south on Highway 285 for seven and a half hours, past Santa Fe, through the dark desert sands at Albuquerque, across sunbaked southern New Mexico and into the Texas panhandle at El Paso, where they caught Interstate 10 going east.

The blistering Chihuahuan desert featured some of the most empty and desolate land Chantley ever witnessed. It seemed unimaginable for so much country to exist without a sign of human habitation. In India, even in the wild, it was impossible to drive more than an hour without coming across signs of human activity.

“We have to stop,” she finally exclaimed, feeling as hot and desiccated as a potato chip abandoned on the car seat, her tongue gritty, with dehydration cracking her lips.

“I saw a sign for a lake a couple miles back,” said Sam, slowing down. He turned around and, minutes later, exited the paved highway and onto a dirt road which, after a seven-mile drive, ended on the banks of a small cerulean-blue lake. It was set among golden-brown hills, the surface remaining calm enough to perfectly mirror the small cotton-ball clouds moving low in the sky, colored purple by the setting sun.

When the car rolled to a stop, trailing dust, Chantley ran to the water's edge, took off her shoes and stepped in, the cool waves lapping deliciously at her toes. With dusk’s arrival, the temperature finally felt bearable and the breeze blowing off the lake sent a tremor of delight down her body.

Sam joined her and entwined his fingers with hers. Chantley’s heart thrilled at the unexpected romantic gesture. His hands clasped the small of her back, sending a tingling up her spine. He drew her closer. She laughed and pulled away.

“Let's swim,” she said. She returned to the car, changed into a one-piece black swimsuit, and stepped out.

Sam whistled as she instinctively covered her chest with her hands. “You're one hot mama,” he declared.

Her cheeks turning red, she ran into the water and gasped as coolness enveloped her. She swam about a hundred yards, to the middle of the lake, with Sam following. He came beside her, and they floated on their backs, gazing into the quickly-darkening sky. Sam held out his right arm and she rested her head on it, using her left arm to clasp his shoulder. His powerful biceps and muscular torso revealed a strength so far concealed by his intellect and she ran her fingers along his neck and shoulders, tracing the curvature of his body as hers washed up against his. For the first time since her arrival in America, she felt no stress nor anxiety about her future. Becoming totally at ease with Sam, she crossed the bridge between initial awkwardness to acceptance, from searching for hints and clues to feeling mentally relaxed.

Is he the one? Would I spend the rest of her life with him? Of course, they had known each other for just one month, but he made her feel wanted, comfortable, in a way that Vijay never did.
