Gage took statements from Father Delgado and Sister Renata before they left. He called his partner who was overseeing the surveillance disbanding at the Bradens’ house. Rex was happy as hell to inform SSA Paris that the case had been solved and that his assistance was no longer required.

The captain wanted a woman involved in Leticia’s questioning so Bev Palmer was on her way to the hospital, along with about twenty reporters who followed her from the family home. The department would need to hold a press conference, but his boss wanted to wait until they had at least a preliminary exam of the child, because many of the questions would be about her condition.

The grandparents arrived with Skyler and their private waiting room suddenly became very crowded. Gage sipped a cup of coffee as he paced, going over the case in his mind as he kept one eye on Jack. The busy uncle fielded phone calls and tried to keep his parents and the Crossleys mollified as they waited to see Leticia.

Marsha Donnelly returned with a silver-haired doctor in a white lab coat. She searched the room and when she spotted Gage, they approached him and Bev. “Detective, this is Dr. Ronald Allen, Chief of Pediatrics.”

They called in the big guns. Gage extended a hand. “Detective Gage and this is Detective Palmer. How is she, Doctor?”

He shook with Gage and Bev then said, “My initial examination would indicate that the child is in very good condition, given what happened to her. We believe she might have been drugged to make her sleep but she’s alert now, so hopefully it was a mild, over-the-counter med. Besides the haircut, there are no signs of abrasions, other than some sticky tape marks on her wrists.”

Gage wondered about Leticia’s sweater. “No cuts that might have bled? When we found her sweater it had blood on it.”

Dr. Allen shook his head. “It wasn’t from her. We swabbed her for DNA, so you can rule it out.”

Nodding, Gage exchanged glances with Bev and asked the question that he knew was on both of their minds. “Were there any indications of sexual assault?”

He shook his head vehemently. “Absolutely none upon examination and the child confirmed it. Leticia isn’t saying much, but she did verify that no one touched her ‘down there’.”

Gage exhaled with relief. “Great. Sounds like she was lucky.”

“Extremely. I’ve done some blood work and I plan to keep her overnight to be safe, but if everything comes back as I expect it will, she’ll be released to go home tomorrow.”

“Very good. Thank you, Doctor.”

Marsha said, “If you two would like to go in now, I can take you to her room.”

Gage glanced at Bev then over at the family who couldn’t hear their conversation, but seemed to be watching intently. He caught Jack’s eye and noticed the concern still evident there. He turned back to the woman. “Ms. Donnelly, Leticia has a lot of people anxious to see her. Suppose we
