26.

The door was locked. Luke swore silently. He took a step back and looked up at the façade of the beautiful old turn-of-the-century building on Kungsholmsgatan 24 in Stockholm. It was eight thirty in the evening. Seven and a half hours after he decided to try to get hold of Maria Palm, he was standing outside her home.

Luke looked to the left down the sidewalk in the quiet hope that someone who lived there would come back after having been out on some errand. A stream of people passed him, and he thought appreciatively of the calm tempo in Karlskrona. Despite that it was evening and darkness began to fall, it was warm out.

He stepped forward and stood by the door. He leaned against the wall and waited. After a few minutes, an older couple came from inside the building. They were both very frail and shuffled forward. The man held the door open for his wife. Luke took hold of it and held it so they could both come out. The man thanked him and the pair turned off to the left towards the hotel. Luke slipped in quickly and looked at the name plates that sat right inside the door. He found Maria immediately. She lived on the top floor, the fourth. He decided to take the stairs.

The stairwell was the most luxurious he had ever seen. The marble images on the walls and on the floor, a gigantic crystal chandelier in the ceiling, two large stone vases that stood on pillars on either side of the beautiful stone steps, green plants in the window niches. He had a flashback to the last time he went up the stairs of an apartment building looking for someone who was missing. His pulse increased as he went up the stairs with quick steps. The rising heart rate wasn’t only from the physical effort.

He reached the top landing and stopped with one foot on the top step. The marble floor looked like a chess board with black and white painted squared. There were two apartments off of the landing. Two large, beautiful, grey wooden doors next to each other.

Luke stood still for a moment to catch his breath. The elevator started moving with a low screech. He was struck by how quiet it was. Must be a well-insulated building, he thought, walking to the door that said “Maria Palm.” He pressed the doorbell but didn’t hear anything. He pressed his ear to the door. The hairs on his arm stood on end. He heard music.

Jazz.

He knew the song.
