THIRTEEN

Messing would be bringing a photographer, so McKenna decided a bit of a show was necessary for the Post’s late-edition front-page photo. He called the Crime Scene Unit, and they would be there to provide some hocus pocus for the camera.

Cisco parked the car in the 25th Precinct’s parking lot, and they set out to walk the block and a half to the church. They lingered a few minutes at the corner of East 117th Street and Lexington Avenue to take in the St. Cecilia’s complex from a distance of half a city block.

The church, the rectory, and the school playground were on one side of East 117th Street, and the school and convent were on the other. All the buildings were constructed of brick that had been painted red many times over the years, and McKenna guessed they had to be a hundred years old. He also thought it shouldn’t take Monsignor Lima too long to come up with a few ideas on how to spend the money Justice had given his church. There were shingles missing from the roofs of both the church and the convent, the gutters were hanging from the side of the school, all the windows were old with panes framed in wood, and McKenna doubted if any of the buildings had been renovated in fifty years, if ever.

Then they saw the Crime Scene Unit van pull up, and first out was Joe Walsh. His presence at that hour meant he had been working since McKenna had seen him last, the afternoon before, so Walsh being there was a surprise for him.

But not for Cisco. “I knew it,” he said. “Front-page photo in the Post, and Walsh figured a way to get his fat ass in it.”

The rest of Walsh’s team went to the rectory’s front door, but not Walsh. He had seen McKenna and Cisco standing on the corner, and he stood waiting for them.

“He’s got something for us,” McKenna guessed.

“Sure he does. I can see his dopey I’m-so-great grin from here.”

Then Messing and his photographer pulled in behind the Crime Scene Unit van, and Walsh apparently forgot all about McKenna and Cisco. Messing was driving, and Walsh was at his door and talking to him before he even got out of the car. That got McKenna and Cisco hurrying down the block, but not fast enough. Walsh had finished talking and Messing was out of his car and writing in his notepad by the time they arrived.

Messing finished writing, then reread his notes, and McKenna could see there was almost a full page. “Amazing amount of work you did, Joe,” Messing commented as he put his notepad back in his pocket. “Glad you got some results outta it.”

“What results?” McKenna asked Walsh, but it was Messing who answered. “The blood. Walsh found Justice’s blood, type B negative. Did an amazing amount of work, might help narrow your search considerably if he’s a cop.”

He’s right, McKenna thought. B negative has to be a rare type, and we must have all the cops’ blood types on a computer file somewhere.
