Chapter 17
Cray prowled around the outside of the house, unconcerned about being seen. It was full dark now, had been for hours. All the women would be able to see through the windows was a flat black square. Still, he stayed to the darker shadows out of habit.
Nothing had happened. Not here and not at the café. Even so, he couldnât shake the disquiet that had settled over him the moment Lucas informed him of the plan. The wind was coming from the northwest. Fairly typical for this time of year, but it made Cray nervous.
Lucas didnât want the neighbors to notice anyone tramping through their yards, which was smart. They didnât want to give away the fact that there was often at least one person watching Lylaâs house. Well, what had been Lylaâs house. But still, with the wind steady out of the northwest, it turned the dark clumps of trees across the street into black impenetrable shields. And Cray didnât like it one bit.
He approached Jesse, stationed on the east side of the property. âAnything?â
âNah. Lady putting out her garbage a little while ago, but thatâs it.â
He nodded. âCatch anything from across the street?â
Jesse shook his head in disgust. âWindâs in the wrong direction.â
âYeah.â It had been worth a shot. Jesse had the best nose in the pack. Except possibly young Jeff. And Jeff was in wolf form. Hmmm. Maybe Cray could talk him into taking a look. But no. Jeff would never defy his Alpha. None of them would. Cray needed to convince Lucas it was worth the risk.
He nodded to Jesse and moved past him toward the back of the yard, where heâd last seen the Alpha. Lylaâs house backed up to the woods in the back, which was convenient since the pack owned those woodsâand the swath of forest between here and the territory. Which technically made this pack territory. Although he didnât think anyone had mentioned that fact to Lyla. Or Mari.
He spotted Lucas just beyond the edge of the trees and approached. âSomething doesnât feel right,â he said without preamble. âWhat do you think about sending Jeff over for a recon across the street?â
Lucas regarded him steadily for a moment and then nodded. âI think itâs time. The girls will be coming out soon.â He started walking toward the west side of the property. Gage was stationed over there, almost like an early warning system since the wind was coming from that direction, and he was the only one who knew Rivioâs scent. Not that they expected him to turn up here, but Lucas wasnât taking any chances. Not after baiting the trap. And not with Mari inside.
Jeff was there too, since he was an excellent little tracker, especially in wolf form. And if they should catch the scent, he would be after it like a shot. Cray had a feeling Jesse would have preferred that duty, but Lucas must have felt it was time to give the kid that responsibility. Demonstrate beyond words that he was a full member of the pack now.
