Chapter 17
âCanât we take a break? Weâve been over this so many times my mind is spinning.â Chloe combed through her hair, pushing it away from her face.
Matthew spun around to look at her, hating the way he was pushing her. But he couldnât shake the feeling that they were playing against time and that time was winning. âIâm sorry, I know youâre tired. I just keep thinking if we go over it again, weâll see something we missed. Something Harry saw.â
âSomething that got him killed.â Chloe released her hair. The soft brown curls immediately flopped into her face again, refusing to be combed into order. âWell, we know I donât have any papers that belong to Messer.â
Matthew looked at the paraphernalia spread out on the coffee table. Chloe was a pack rat, but there was nothing that didnât belong. Nothing that could possibly be related to either Messer or Lisa.
Chloe followed his gaze and frowned, biting her lower lip, looking at once vulnerable and desirable. âThereâs nothing there. I donât have anything.â
âI know, sweetheart, but somebody thinks you do. Weâve just got to try and figure out what. Tell me again what Harry said to you.â
Chloe sighed. âHe said âTell Matthew and Ben â¦â and then he sort of exhaled and died.â
âDamn it.â He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. âTell us what?â
Her lower lip trembled, but her gaze was steady. âI donât know.â
âItâs all right, Chloe. Weâre going to figure this out. Weâve just got to make sure we look at it from every angle.â
She nodded, her upper teeth worrying the soft skin of her lower lip.
Matthew fought against the desire to pull her into his arms. There was still so much between them. Her anger had passed, but there was something in her eyes, a glimmer of indecision that hadnât been there before. He cursed himself once again. If only heâd trusted her from the beginning. Talked to her.
But he hadnât.
He forced himself to clear his mind. He had to concentrate on the facts in front of them. The most important thing right now was to figure out what in the hell was going on. âSo, obviously either someone followed Harry to your hotel room, or he interrupted someone.â
âWell, if he interrupted someone, then maybe they got whatever it was they were looking for.â She looked up at him hopefully, and he wished with all his heart he could tell her it was over, but every instinct he had told him it wasnât.
âMaybe.â He looked over at the desk by the window. His duffel bag was still on the floor, the rest of his things lined up neatly on the desktop. His little travel alarm was glowing against the velvet of the curtains. âBut itâs doubtful.â He stared down at his things, something teasing at the back of his mind.
âSo what do we do next?â
Frustration welled inside him. There had to be answers somewhere. His brain ran up a flag, his subconscious telegraphing an urgent message.
The clock.
