CHAPTER 29

Anvil dragged the fat dude’s body to Jeannie’s car and dumped it in the unlocked trunk. Damn heavy fucker—Anvil already ached with lack of sleep. The dogs, tasting blood and victory, pulsed and twitched. Redge—in particular—pulsated with rage, still freaked at being gouged the day before. Stubborn jerks needed a fistful of downers.

Time to take the beasts to his own truck hidden in the bush and stuff them with jerky. Then retrieve Barry’s gun and bunk down in the old man’s Ford. Too many keys and phones. “Sick of fumbling with the rotten things.”

The pit bulls snapped at each other—soaked in a nonstop fighting mood. Anvil needed to rest and shut them up. No energy left to break in and deal with the woman. Not tonight.

He’d finish the slut tomorrow and then disappear into the Canadian wild—too risky to linger much longer. Rivers of blood snaked around Barry’s front walkway. The charming cobblestone pathway transformed into a double-murder scene.

Anvil barked back at his dogs—ordering them to calm down—and headed for Barry’s body. He pulled away the blanket and squinted at the ruined corpse.

No gun.

That meant Jeannie pinched it. He snarled at the twinkly night and stared at the darkened barn house. Lights off, whore cowering in a corner.

“Sneaky bitch.”

He didn’t notice his brutes helping themselves to a finger or two. Poor schmuck—almost chewed to bones. Just like his buddy, Grayson.

Anvil squeezed his hands into fists. Stiff, sore, arthritic. He wanted to be lounging in a cushy hotel, not standing on the outside looking in. He shifted his attention back to the dogs, their maws smeared with gore—a dangerous duo now. They’d be no good in the dog fights after sampling human blood. Shame he had to turn them on the unwelcome visitor. No choice.

He sighed. Best to put them down before they turned on him. The thought gave him no pleasure. Simple necessity.

“You boys aren’t gonna listen to me anymore. You got that killer instinct. Same as me. Taste for flesh now, huh? Matter of time before you rip off my hide. Ain’t ending up like the dead fag you’re munching on, either.”

Anvil tossed a stick; the bit pulls didn’t budge. Even through the charcoal night, he felt their eyes—and their hatred.

“Let’s go feed you some rawhide.”

He smacked his hands, but they ignored him.

“Move on, MOTHERFUCKERS!”

He almost kicked Redge, the stronger dog, but held back at the last minute. He needed the sawed-off shotgun underneath the driver’s seat of his old Chevy.

Brutes were past the point of being controlled. But for now they followed their master deep into the woods on the promise of real, chewy meat.
