Chapter 5
Marcia was forced to wait fifteen minutes for Jackson to come out of the only available bathroom. Apparently, he'd chosen this week to decide to remodel the other bathrooms as well. No water was running in any of them.
While he was downstairs, she sat on the edge of the tub and had a long think about what had happened. Her body still vibrated at intervals when she remembered the way he had taken control of her pleasure. The way she had surrendered to him.
Why did I do that? she asked herself for the thousandth time since he'd left her in spasms on the floor.
It would be a lie to say she never wanted it. She'd never thought she'd get it. Jackson was like a strawberry shortcake with glazed fruit and thick, creamy icing on top. The shocking part was that he tasted the way he looked. Absolutely delicious.
Ten years hadn't dampened her memory of him either. She and Claudia had opted to spend their Christmas Break in Dallas rather than drive all the way to Peachville for two days, only to drive all the way back to school. The Coles hadn't liked that, and since Peachville was further away than Austin, they'd sent Jackson to check up on them. His unexpected arrival had caused a whole lot of problems. Firstly, Claudia was on a ski trip in Aspen with a male friend. And secondly, the only way for Marcia to keep Jackson silent about it was by letting him spend Christmas with her - alone in the apartment she shared with his sister. Nothing had come of it, except that for two days, Jackson had kept relocating the mistletoe. He'd kissed her on her ear, her cheek, her neck, her hand, her lips. It wasn't until he'd taped it to ceiling above the shower that Marcia had taken the torch lighter to it and left him with the sizzling lump of plastic that he'd stopped ambushing her.
At the time he'd been single. He was never really without a girlfriend, but he had been running solo for about a year now. Marcia knew the dates because a year ago he'd taken a week off to come to San Antonio and crash in David's spare room. He'd eventually dropped in on his sister, and that was how Claudia had met her brother's former college roommate. And since Marcia was at the time still living at Claudia's place, she'd heard all the gory details of his breakup. All one stupid reason. His ex had left him because he worked too much. What kind of woman left a man because he worked too much? It wasn't as if Maxine had needed to worry about where Jackson was at any given moment. Not when he worked sixteen hour days to make sure his restaurant could compete successfully with all the chain steakhouses in the city. If he worked too much, then help him! Only an idiot would leave a workaholic for an unemployment line resident.
