Prudence

I’m mad. And sad. And embarrassed. And… whatever bad feelings you can have, I’ve got them. By the time he pulls into my driveway, I’ve calmed down. Enough to know that this is probably for the best. When he shuts off the engine, I hold onto his shoulders and kick my leg over to dismount. He doesn’t move, thank goodness. What would I do if he decided he wanted to walk me to my door, or worse, come inside? I don’t have any fight left in me. I’m exhausted from all the emotions of the last few days.

Truth be told, the fact Travis is having a child with Barbie, with anyone, hurts more than I can say. I meant it when I admitted to Nate that I’m relieved we didn’t have children, but I’m human, and being slapped in the face with that new information sucks.

“Look,” I say unable to make eye contact with him. “This isn’t going to work.”

“Yeah.” He nods, then scratches his cheek.

Okay. Don’t roll your eyes at me, but dang it, he could at the very least fight for me. Except he doesn’t.

“Look. I’m sorry about earlier. That was a bullshit move on my part. But the fact of the matter is, you aren’t ready.”

He’s right. “I know.” I raise my hand to shake his. When he places his in mine, I’m jolted forward. His arm closest to me wraps around my waist while his lips touch mine. It’s a soft kiss. Gentle. Heck, I’d even call it sweet. “The second you are, sweetheart, you give me a call, yeah?”

“Yeah.” I blink as our eyes meet. He means it. “I will.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

He pats my bottom, then lets me go. I step back as his bike rumbles to life. Standing in my driveway, I watch his taillights disappear into the night, and I think about the feelings running through me. There are a lot of them. Too many to handle all at once.
