Grieving

When Keeno got back to the office it was nearly 9 p.m. He slumped into his chair still feeling the weight of recent events. Besides some bruises and a couple minor cuts, Keeno had miraculously survived the car crash. Jake on the other hand was getting his head stitched up by the RCMP in-house doctor.

Keeno had gone straight from the car wreck to see Betty, Ralph´s wife now widowed. He had spent the last two hours watching as the woman’s world came apart. After the news, Betty merely sat down on her couch and stared at the floor without a word for what seemed a very long time. Indeed, no words were said between them until she finally raised her head and looked at Keeno, tears were rolling down her cheek, “Married thirty four years with the man and it never occurred to me that he would be gone this soon, or in this way,” she smiled weakly but the tears pooled and flowed even more.

Keeno felt a complete sense of uselessness. He had nothing to offer. His training in life had never included informing relatives or close friends of things like this. In fact, in his entire career the only people that ever died around him were criminals and in Keeno’s book they didn’t deserve a moment’s thought. But losing Ralph was shattering and it took him another hour to get Betty talking and to stem the grief. He then made a call to her sister and got the two of them together and promised Betty on his way out the door that Ralph´s death would not be in vain.
