Chapter

Reese stopped. He blinked unearthly eyes. Vincent came to his feet but stopped. He promised he would give Ellie a shot. He waited, ready to go right back at him.

Reese's body shifted back down to human. Vincent hesitated but did the same.

“Really?” Reese said, standing naked before her.

The grievous wounds that would have killed a dozen other men healed fast. Reese swept some of the glittering powder onto his fingertips. He smelled it, eyes narrowing.

“What did ya do, little firecracker?” Reese asked, voice dripping with suspicion.

Ellie popped the top off the flare she had in her left hand.

“Have you ever heard of thermate?” she asked casually.

Reese cocked a brow.

“Funny stuff, it doesn't need oxygen to burn due to the aluminothermic reaction. Half as hot as the sun and nothing puts it out. It will burn a hole in the world if you let it.”

Ellie popped the flare. It exploded to life throwing reddish light over them.

“Magnesium, black powder, aluminum oxide, and some sulfur for good measure.”

His eyes went wide, showing too much white. He was afraid. Good.

“Now... you can come to kill me. There's not a thing I can do to stop you. But... I drop this,” Ellie said waggling the flare. “And both of us are gone. Something tells me even you won't come back from this.”

Reese eyed the flare. Memories of caustic fire crashed into him. His throat closed. His heart galloped like a horse headed for full tilt. Reese gulped for air, and couldn't get enough.

Reese swallowed loud enough that both Ellie and Vincent heard it.

Vincent came up behind her. A tight fist closed around his heart. Reese dropped his shields. He tasted her. He searched for her reasons.

“Why don't ya drop it, kill me?” Reese asked, genuinely curious.

“Your brother loves you.”

Reese frowned. He could not hide the confusion. If he was her, he’d have dropped it. Vincent already tried to kill him once, what the hell did he care?

“You two,” Ellie said, looking from one to the other of them, “are going to work this shit out. You loved each other once. Get drunk, scrap it out, talk it out, I don't care! I swear on the gun at my back, you try to kill each other one more time, and all three of us go out! Understood?” she declared.

The flare guttered.

“So, what's to stop me from waiting till this is all over, and ya ain’t got that flare in your hand?” Reese asked.

Vincent shook his head in annoyance. He gave in to that tiny glimmer of hope. It was fading with every second that ticked by. A surge of sorrow washed over Vincent. All of his other fears aside. He wanted this to work.

“I told you Reese is gone. All that's left is the Monster that wears his face,” Vincent murmured.

There was anger, yes. But his despair nearly broke Ellie's heart. She looked up at Reese. For just a moment, she thought he heard it too. Ellie swallowed. She made her decision.

“Faith.”

She took a step back, and put the fiery end of the flare in the snow, left it there to sputter out.
