Chapter 16-

Daisy’s News

It was odd to wake up in a windowless room. For all I knew, it could still be night outside. I awoke on the hard, cold floor. At least I didn’t have to make the bed. I felt refreshed. Not a single muscle ached. In fact, I felt like I could run for miles.

I rubbed my eyes and fingered my knotted hair. The door opened and Daisy walked in with a tray of oatmeal and some type of gray juice. From the odor, I’m guessing it was orange at some time. She lay the tray at my feet.

“You smell awful,” she said with a grimace. “And your hair? Don’t you care what you look like?”

I took a sip of the liquid. Sure enough it was orange juice without the pulp. I’d never tasted anything like it. This would give Florida’s Natural a run for their money. “Well, sorry but this cell you put me in doesn’t exactly have showers.”

I took the silver spoon on the tray and stirred the oatmeal. Little rumpled black raisins mixed within. I smiled. “You remembered.”

She hit me on the shoulder, “Well, of course, you idiot.”

I spooned the oatmeal into my mouth. It had a slight sweet taste. Perhaps jam was added. In any case, it was delicious.

While I ate, I looked at Daisy’s golden hair. She paced about the room like a metronome. The golden locks lay over her shoulder. It was so vibrant here. No Pantene-ProV could have that effect.

After a big gulp of oatmeal, I said, “Daisy, I have to ask you a question, but please don’t get angry with me.”

She raised her coarse dark eyebrows, “Not likely, but go ahead.”

She stood over me. I thought maybe she would sit next to me, put a hand on my shoulder. Yet even now she did not want to get a speck of dust on her satin robe.

I said slowly, “It’s just your hair, it’s so beautiful.” Her delicate fingers glided through her locks.

“I know.”

She crouched down to my level. She lay her robe carefully on the floor so only the inside would be dusty.

She said softly, “The most miraculous thing happened. At the river, after you left me there to die,” there’s that all-too-familiar piercing stare. “I tried to grab onto a tree root, a rock, anything, but the current was just too strong.”

She looked to the floor. Her eyes became clouded. She put her face in her hands. “Finally, I called out that stupid bear’s name — Atlas — and I just appeared on the other side of the river with my golden hair. I wasn’t wet or anything.”

My heart leapt in my chest. “So you saw Atlas? Isn’t he incredible? Did you pet his white coat?”

Daisy punched me in the forearm. “Gwen, you don’t know what you are talking about. The bear that helped me out of the river, he wasn’t white. He was black.”

I choked on the orange juice. My heart sank and all the weight returned to my shoulders.
