Aaliyah gingerly inserted the key into the lock and turned her wrist until the snick of the deadbolt releasing broke the silence. She felt like a thief in the night. She had no clue why she thought coming home for her 10-year class reunion had been a good idea. Hadn’t she done her best to escape this one-horse town? She could have stayed at a motel and avoid the discomfort.

Hell, she could have avoided the reunion altogether. She’d spent the better part of the evening talking with the same few people she’d been friends with in school. To think she could have stayed home and gotten the same interaction by logging in to Facebook.

Occasionally someone from the in-crowd would corner her and lament over Aaliyah’s single status and lack of children. She shook her head. As if having children was what defined the entire female species, what she had to aspire to. Of course, she wanted kids someday but not while she was still in her 20s and definitely not until she met Mr. Right.

The evening had been absolutely tedious. Hearing people she’d disliked in school drone on about benign subjects like the perfect store to purchase garden gnomes, and then being hit on by several overweight, balding former jocks, it was all more than she could handle.

She had flown across half the country for that? Major waste of time. After the updated class picture she’d quietly exited the raucous gymnasium without so much as a goodbye. Now she was perfectly happy to be alone for the night.

Careful not to make any extra noise, she pushed open the front door and entered the house. Despite her foul mood, a small smile appeared across her lips at the sight of the foyer light glowing bright. Even after all these years later, her stepdad still watched out for her.

Locking the door behind her, she shut off the light and turned to go upstairs when a sound stopped her cold. Had he stayed up too? She walked to the back of the house and into the great room only to find it empty. The noise was there again, closer this time, and she turned to find the basement door ajar.

It was unlocked!

Her mother had married Blaise when Aaliyah had been a toddler and she couldn’t remember a single time when the basement door had been unlocked. Soon after she reached the tumultuous years that came with puberty, she tried to go in, using a screwdriver to jimmy the doorknob. What followed was the sternest lecture she’d ever had from her mom.

It was as if they were keeping state secrets down there! Since she wasn’t looking to be read the riot act again, she kept her distance from that door. All her mother said was that there were “dangerous tools” down there and that she had all the toys and needed upstairs.

“Proper young ladies aren’t snoopy,” she used to tell her.

But now she wasn’t sure she was a proper young lady.
