Chapter 5

Darien could feel his energy dripping onto the forest floor, and he clutched the blade with his hands as he struggled to stand. He felt her knee against his right cheek as he did and he sank back to the ground.

“You didn’t think you could get away with it did you? He was my father, and you killed him!”

Darien glared up at her as the moonlight struck his eyes. “And I would do it again if I had the chance. The man was a monster, and I had done him no wrong.”

“He needed you, and you left because you wanted to make a better life for yourself,” she said mockingly. “Do you feel better now?”

The sword dug into him, and as he started feeling weak, he heard Alesha’s voice, almost from a distance howling. He felt the sword slice through his flesh as it was withdrawn. He gripped the aperture and squeezed down; red liquid flowed over his fingers and he rested his head against the bark of the tree as he tried to regain focus. He had taken too long to feed, and he felt even weaker than he should be. He could see the sparks flying as metal hit metal in what seemed an endless battle. Was that a bear? He squinted as he rolled his back upwards against the tree and stood facing friends he never knew he had.

He had been outnumbered and quite possibly ambushed. It’s like Alesha knew he would be coming and where he would be going. Unless, there were spies who had given her the heads up. Just then his mind raced to Rose alone in the penthouse and he made a step to take off and return. He crashed onto the ground, too weak to walk steadily. From his horizontal position, he saw the bear slap Alesha and she fell against the tree. As she rolled to the ground, her teeth fully descended, she rushed into the bear, but before she could get to him, a werewolf slammed into her, pinning her to the ground. It tore at her face, but she managed to wriggle from underneath it and leap onto its back.

And like magic, the werewolf transformed into a rabbit, and Alesha was left stranded in mid air before she fell like a cat on all four. “What are you?” she asked as the rabbit now took the form of a man.

“Hold that thought,” the wolf, rabbit man said as he gripped Lucius from behind and toss him in a heap at Alesha’s feet.

Two more men emerged into the moonlight and charged for the now retreating vampires. “This isn’t over,” she screeched as she fled from sight.

“You can count on that,” one of the others said softly.

That’s enough. Darien had seen too much, and apparently he had been hallucinating as well. His head began to spin and he found it hard to keep his eyes open. He just needed to feed, and then he would be alright. That was his
