Dexx… didn’t die.

His body hurt way too much to be dead.

Except for his head, which hurt but didn’t have any trace of Bussemi or the ward sickness for once.

He felt Hattie in his head, so at least she hadn’t been hurt too badly.

The smell of cooking meat pulled him out of his desire to sleep more. Rainbow talked softly as she moved around. Obviously, some time had passed, and something was being done while he was out. “How long?” His voice croaked and cracked.

Short soft grass under him was chilled and damp, but not uncomfortable. They were on another plane. It might have been the plain he sat with Hattie and watched the grazers nibble on. He’d have to open his eyes to find out.

Rainbow shuffled to his side. “Hey, boss. Just a day this time. I got some food cooking up. I haven’t heard from Mario or anyone else. I think you got him good this time.”

“Good.” He could use a day without being chased. One eye opened.

Nope, they were still in the ruins, in the natural ring of boulders.

“Hey. We got a fire going. And food, too. You hungry?” The fire danced shadows against the tall stones.

Dexx cracked his other eye open. “How did you start a fire?”

“Well, actually, we kind of worked together on it. I can set it up, but making the fire burn? I’m still—” She shook her head. “Being a water elemental is one thing. Being unable to survive? That’s dumb.”

He chuckled and then wished he hadn’t as his ribs creaked. “So how is everyone? Last I saw, Mario had all of you down.”

“It wasn’t that bad.” The look in Rainbow’s eyes said otherwise, but she kept her tone chipper. “It was just pain, mostly. A little bit of time, and we were all good.”

Just pain. She’d said it like the pain was a small thing like a glass of water. Just water, just pain. What had she gone through that she had that kind of resilience?

Fat cat, you hanging in there?

As well as the hunter in prime hunting lands.

So that was strange. She said words, but the feeling was a different set of words. she was lying.

He braced his arm and sat up. Rusty hinges were easier to move. They complained less, too.

A pound of dust fell from him as he changed positions.

“You need a bath.” Rainbow pinched her nose with her fingers.

“Thanks. Any other really important hygiene comments you’d like to throw my way?”

“Yes, but I think we should have hot water and a mirror first. I mean, I could go for a good soak, but I’m a water girl, so that could be just me. But you’re a boy, and the first thing they do is stink. Not a bad stink, really, but I could probably ping you from a mile away. Hey, we could try that, you know. As soon as you get something to eat, I mean. Did you want to do that?”

Dexx held his hand out for Rainbow to grab.
