Her blue eyes were wide as if she’d just figured out my meaning. “As in you lost your virginity with her?”

I nodded and she looked like she might fall. I moved quickly and walked her into my room. When she reached it, she collapsed as if the world fell away from her feet. I had no idea why Amber being my first gave her that reaction but I bided my time and gave her a moment to speak.

“Did you love her?”

I wasn’t exactly expecting that question but it was a logical one.

“I think at one time, I thought I loved her.”

“But….”

Fear gripped my chest again. There was a good reason why I knew I never loved Amber. “I was young and infatuated with her. I thought she loved me and I had no idea what love was.”

Her face crinkled and she asked, “How old were you?”

I turned away to answer. “Thirteen.” The boy I was then surfaced for a second and I remembered a conversation with Amber that had changed everything.

“Thirteen. You both were so young.”

I met her stormy eyes. “I was thirteen. She was fifteen, almost sixteen.”

She looked at me with shock in her eyes but then nodded. “So what happened between the two of you?”

“Our parents were friends, and when they came over and wanted to talk they would send us away, forgetting we weren’t kids anymore. One time she asked if I wanted to make out. I was thirteen and horny as hell. So I did. It wasn’t my first time kissing a girl. When she let me feel her up under her clothes, I tried more.” I shrugged. “It wasn’t all that great. I think I spilled my first load after pushing in on the first stroke. I quickly recovered and lasted a few more strokes before I lost it again.”

Her laugh was welcome after she’d gone quiet, even though it was at my expense.

“She laughed too.”

I thought bitterly back to the day I was returning to England and I professed my feelings to her. She’d told me I was too young and she couldn’t be with me beyond all the sex we’d shared that summer. I was going back to England, and I should find a girl my own age, she’d said.

“It’s not funny,” she said, trying not to giggle. “So she broke your heart.”

“No, but she made me work harder in bed. By the end of the summer she was seeking me out to give her pleasure. And I thought that meant she wanted more. I know now it wasn’t anything more than a crush.”

“Have you ever been in love?”

“Yes.” I hoped she didn’t ask more.

“Have you ever cheated on anyone?”

It was making sense. She was putting me in the shoes of her ex. “I haven’t ever cheated because I’ve never had a girlfriend.”

“Do you think you could cheat?”

“I’m not Charles. I wouldn’t cheat on you. You’re important to me. And there is a reason you are my first girlfriend. I chose you, just like you chose me.
