We start with a tour of the house, which to me is just a house, but to Genevieve is a very big deal. I’m gently embarrassed by this; the last thing I want to do is show off. But she takes it in stride and tells me not to be ashamed of the benefits of my success. Fair enough.

Next we take a drive along the coast, and I show her the rest of Ocean City. It’s a beautiful day and the car windows are wide open; it makes me wish I had a convertible. Someday, maybe. I truly let my mind depart from the very serious thoughts that have plagued me for the past two weeks. The more time I spend with Genevieve, the more entranced by her I become. I’m ashamed to admit that I did initially have my doubts about her because of her occupation, but she’s proving to be sophisticated, intelligent, funny, and very caring. My attraction to her grows stronger by the hour.

We haven’t discussed what happens tonight; I declined her advances last weekend with the excuse that I didn’t want it to feel like a one-night stand. But now she’s back, and it’s clearly not a one-night stand. Could I sleep with her tonight? I imagine she’d accept the gentlest offer. Still, I’ve never had sex with someone I didn’t love. I don’t think I love her. I think I could someday, but is that enough to put aside my—

“Yoo-hoo.”

Her voice snaps me out of my thoughts. “Yes?”

“You got quiet there. I wanted to make sure you were still with me. Since, you know, you’re driving and all.”

“Oh, I’m still with you. Thinking about you, as a matter of fact.”

“Lost in thought over little me? I feel special.”

“Well, good. You are special. I was just wondering how long you can stay.”

“I have to be back at work on Monday,” she says, “but I’d love to spend the night, if you’ll have me.”

Curious choice of verb. “Of course. I know a wonderful place for Sunday brunch tomorrow.”

“Sounds great. Where are we headed now?”

“Salisbury. I want to show you my office, if that wouldn’t bore you to tears.”

“I’ll suppress them as a matter of courtesy. Lead on.”

As we pull up to the building twenty minutes later, she marvels at the size of the place. “All this from LEDs?”

“All this. My father’s invention has served me well.”

“I’d say so. Are we gonna raise any eyebrows if you walk in with me?”

I smile a bit at her very valid question. “I’ll take my chances.”

We enter the building, which is sparsely populated for a Saturday. I’m not a huge fan of overtime when we’re running on schedule and according to plan. But a few people are in, doing their thing, and they greet me as I pass in the corridors.

“Afternoon, sir.”

“Afternoon.”

“Hi, Mr. Shays.”

“Hi, good to see you.”

“Afternoon, Admiral.”

“How are you?”

Genevieve turns to me, holding back a little smile. “Admiral?”

“Long story.”

“Well, aye-aye, sir. You’ll have to tell me that one later.”

We take the elevator up, and I lead her into my office.
