Amelia’s car was actually more than just that.

I was surprised to find it idling on the curb at the front of the hotel, a man standing outside of it waiting for her and straightening up as she approached. He walked around to the rear door and opened it for her, waiting next to it while she stopped and turned back to me.

“This has been fun, Jax.” She gives me a smile that’s a little more devious looking than I’m expecting.

For some reason, her words have my heart sinking. “Yes, I’ve had fun too. Am I over-assuming by thinking this is you saying goodbye, though?”

She laughs again. “We will have to eventually.”

I sigh and flit my eyes away. While it’s true, I don’t exactly want to think about it. As short of a time as it’s been since meeting her, Amelia’s changed my life completely. No longer am I the same person who day in and day out went through the rigamarole of routine just for the sake of it. I’d somehow discovered a new side of myself that I wasn’t willing to let go of so easily.

It wasn’t Amelia’s responsibility to coax me through this change I was going through, but damn if I didn’t feel attached, no matter how stupid it made me look.

“Jax.” She reaches out a hand, grabbing my arm to squeeze.

About to open my mouth and ask her, “What?” I’m interrupted by another familiar voice.

“Jax?”

Craning my head around, I blink at the sudden appearance of my baby sister standing on the sidewalk a few feet from Amelia and me. She has a paper bag of groceries cradled in her arms while her eyes dart between Amelia and me. Guilt strikes me immediately as I realize I had yet to tell Kylie about this. I’d hinted at it, sure, but never had gone into my status of actually seeing someone.

“Hey.” I move over to her, pulling away from Amelia. “Let me grab those for you.”

She side-steps me, grinning easily. “What, you think just because I’ve got a bun in the oven that I suddenly can’t handle carrying a bag of groceries?”

That made me want to groan and rub a hand over my face. Leave it to Kylie to completely call me out like that. “I’m just trying to help.”

“Save it.” She hip-checks me. “When I get big and bloated, then you can maybe see about carrying my groceries.”

I shake my head at her before patting her on the head like we were kids. “Why are you all the way over this way?”

She narrows her eyes at me, raising a brow while she drawls out, “I could ask you the same thing.”

Shit…

Behind me, I hear Amelia clear her throat. Her heels click on the sidewalk as she walks over to us, the steady sound of them matching with my pulse.

“It’s nice to meet you. I’m Jade.”

My head snaps around to look at her, blinking when she raises a hand to greet my sister. Kylie grins again and shifts her bag of groceries in order to grab Amelia’s hand and shake it properly.
