Day Two at the Sahara Festival

The following morning, the Hadrah and his entourage, including Andy and me, once again departed in the jeeps for the festival site. Areas were set up for horses to drink, and hay was strewn, on which the animals grazed. On the far side, away from the horses, were the camels. Arabians and camels were being auctioned to the highest bidder in an adjacent arena. This event was a market place for horse and camel breeders to sell or trade livestock. It was a Bedouin bazaar, in the truest sense of the word.

The morning started with music and folk bands playing traditional Arabian music, while the camels and the horses were saddled for the parades. Andy and I sat in our VIP seats, watching the festivities unfold.

Ludwig, seated a row below us, turned and smiled, acknowledging our presence. He shouted over the noisy crowd, beckoning us to join him, as there were several vacant seats next to his. Andy and I moved down a row, and bid him good morning.

He greeted us saying, "Hi Guys! How are you this morning?"

We told him we had a good night’s rest and the hotel bed was comfortable to sleep on. He gave us a wicked smile and winked at me, as if to intimate that he knew about the secret relationship between Andy and me.

Andy asked, "Are you ready for the race today?"

Ludwig replied, "Oh, as ready and prepared as one can be. Besides, the races happen tomorrow. This is the day of the camel and horse parades. The racing competition doesn't begin until the third day of the festival."

Then he added, "You guys better get prepared and be ready to compete!"

Andy and I turned to him, our eyes wide, and said, "What? What do you mean compete?"

The young man broke into loud laughter and explained, "Didn't I tell you I signed you both up to participate in the parades and horse racing competitions?"

Andy and I looked at each other in surprise and said, simultaneously, "You did what?"

Ludwig continued, laughing at the prank he had played on us, and replied, "I said, I signed the both of you up to compete in the horse races, and to join my tribe in the parade of the camels and horses! You’d better get suited up and ready for the parades, which will start in two hours."

Andy and I stared at each other in panic.

"Come with me to my tent and I'll get you guys into your Bedouin outfits. I'm sure our tribesmen have something traditional that will fit you,” he continued.

"Come! Let’s go!" he ordered, getting up from his seat and waving his hand for us to follow. We had no choice but to trail behind him. As soon as we reached his tent, he waved in a couple of Abds. He spoke to them in Arabic and quickly dismissed them; they ran to do his bidding.

His tent was strewn with Persian rugs and large, ornate cushions were laid casually on the floor.
