Pausing and lingering with the text is a stumbling block both for those who need to build the muscles of trusting their voices and for those who have had their voices often affirmed. In the classroom, during exercises of encounter I literally see words tremor at the edge of lips threatening to come forth and then sucked back down into silence by uncertainty, self-editing, and the threat of the thought of being too risky or simple and dismissed. This is also the moment in the process where the know-it-all comes to the text already having the answers and resolute about what the sermon will be, or they just cannot resist showing off what they “know” about the significance of a symbol in the passage. Even this “charging forth” in certainty is a hiding of one’s deepest voice and shrouding vulnerability. Allowing oneself to freely encounter the text holds the greatest possibility for discovering an utterance that both apprehends the preacher and listeners as it rings in the possibilities of truth for here and now.
