Chapter 8

Jamie dreamt he was in Tempe again, and Amanda slept beside him. Her curls lay out on the pillow and a couple strands tickled his nose. He rolled over and embraced her. She turned and it was Cecily, and the hair was dark. Her black eyes were frightened and she cried out, “No!”

Reality faded in. He was strapped down to a cot, feet bound at the bottom, hands clamped to the sides of the bed. He was on his stomach and his face was planted into a donut-shaped cushion that allowed him to breathe and see the floor. Below him was all his hair. Someone had shaved his head, which was bound to the cushion wrapping his face.

Cecily spewed out curse words and he could hear her struggling next to him. She must be as trapped as he was.

Nobody used stun guns anymore. He’d completely blacked out, and so had Cecily. Where were they?

He heard a familiar man’s voice, but couldn’t place it. “Jamie, you really shouldn’t have come back. And Cecily, I expected more from you. I felt you the moment you entered our home.”

“Jackass! You killed all those people,” she screamed.

“Your fault. I had to get to you, but you weren’t inside your hideout. It was right under my nose,” the man said. “You’re clever, but stupid. Why did you come back here? To kill me?” He chuckled. “I had everyone here programmed to bring you to me should you ever return. Even your double-agent, Helen, and her husband. They’re all afraid of me now. It’s silly, though. I only have their best interests.”

“Get me out of this thing and face me,” Cecily demanded.

“We have to get something out of the way first. You see, I’ve redesigned the original twelve implants. Expanded, really. Of course, your brother and mother are dead, and that leaves ten. You have one. I have one. Mine has already been…modified. And because I like the number twelve—like Christ’s disciples—I made two more and implanted them.” He didn’t know Steven was still alive.

“Who are you?” Jamie’s voice was weak.

“It’s Michael,” Cecily hissed.

“You used to call me Dada.” He said it with a touch of sadness.

“That was before you became a monster. Let me out of this thing or just go ahead and kill me like you wanted to.”

“Well, I wanted you alive. Let’s just say I know things now that I didn’t before. I have plans for you. Both of you. It won’t hurt to have the new implant put it. Well, it might hurt Jamie, but that’s just because his old one was removed recently. But it will heal quickly.”

Jamie saw brown suede shoes stand on his hair and a shadow cast over his view as Michael bent over. Finally, they were eye to eye.

“Remember me?”

It was Dr. McElroy, the same man who had wiped Jamie’s memory after he killed the men who attacked Amanda. “You’re Michael? Dr. McElroy?” he whispered.

He pushed his sagging glasses up his bony nose. “I really wanted you to have a normal life, but you couldn’t leave it alone.
