ODELL FLASHED HIS POLICE badge for the first time that Marlin had seen in their time together.

“Yes, okay, well, welcome back, Detective Odell,” the front desk clerk said while the clerk smiled a quick, yet fake smile. Odell lifted his eyebrows at the desk clerk’s reaction to studying his badge and his announcement of who he was and that they needed hotel rooms. Marlin understood that Odell reacted because he knew that the front desk clerk did not like police officers, especially detectives. Marlin stood next to Odell, and she noticed his reaction. She smiled at how Odell never stopped tracking crimes or criminals. He was already working the angles in his mind to determine what the desk clerk dabbled in, other than working at the front desk of a hotel. The desk clerk was short, dark-haired, with no unusual or outstanding facial features. Not handsome but not unattractive either—he blended rather well. Except that he was nervous in the presence of Detective Lyle Odell.

The desk clerk cleared his throat and spoke, “I know you have been with us before. I recognize your name. Here are the notes. No reservations, but walk-ins are certainly acceptable. We have an account for the Mohawk City Police Department and you are on the approved list here. Okay, let’s see here.” The desk clerk leaned into the computer screen of the computer to study the current room availability.

“Two rooms. I have some availability here on the sixth floor. One for you and one for the young woman here,” the desk clerk said as he nodded in agreement with what the computer screen reported.

Marlin quickly moved into action. She had a plan.

Marlin stepped in front of Odell and leaned into the front desk. “How much is it for a room with two twin beds rather than one king bed or separate rooms? Taxpayer’s money, you know.”

The desk clerk stared at Marlin. He allowed his eyes to wander her face and then he caught a quick glance at her exposed cleavage in the open neckline of her blouse. Marlin was hot, sweaty, and worn out, but she was still stunning. Perhaps even more so than usual.

The desk clerk’s eyes then went over to Lyle Odell and the clerk swallowed hard before speaking, “Yes, well, very . . . prudent. A single king bed hotel room is one hundred and twenty-nine dollars per night . . . the twin bed room is fifteen dollars less. One hundred and fourteen dollars per night.” The desk clerk looked up and added, “Plus tax.”

Marlin jumped in and said, “We will take the room with the twin beds. We not only saved fifteen bucks, we saved one hundred and twenty-nine dollars, too.”

Marlin flashed a smile and the desk clerk frowned. It seemed as if waves of jealousy had arrived all over his body. Odell was sharing a room with a gorgeous young woman—the desk clerk was not.

“Please, I need to see your identification, Ma’am. Even though I saw you on television. With your sniffing pig.
