Chapter 6

CORY stepped out of the operating room and removed his scrubs, then placed them in the hamper before washing his hands and face. He needed to feel fresh after a situation like that. “You okay?” asked Pierre Moreau, the surgeon he’d been working with for the last few hours.

“I should be asking you that,” Cory said, and both of them nodded slowly before leaving the room. Pierre needed to inform the family that he hadn’t been able to save their daughter. Cory was always grateful he didn’t have that duty. He’d lost patients before, and he would again, but it was always hardest when it was a young child. “Do you want me to go with you?” Cory asked.

“No, I’m fine. We all knew this procedure was risky and that there wasn’t a lot of hope, but….” He let his words trail off. Cory understood, but it still didn’t stop him from wondering if there was anything more they could have done. There wasn’t, no matter how many times he ran things over in his mind. He knew that. But he still wondered; it was his nature. After he watched Pierre leave, Cory checked to make sure he didn’t have anything else on the schedule and then called Brad. “I’m almost done,” he told him.

“It’s so late. Do you still want to go to your parents’ house for dinner?” Brad asked. Cory had been fussing over dinner with his parents all week.

“They’ll understand if we’re a bit late. They know my schedule is unpredictable,” Cory explained as he finished changing and then got ready to leave the hospital. “I’ll be by to pick you up in a few minutes.”

“Okay, if you’re sure,” Brad said.

“My family is going to love you. Don’t worry,” Cory added before hanging up. He signed out and left the hospital, hurried toward his car, and then drove directly to Brad’s, where he stood waiting for him. Cory pulled up at the curb and unlocked the car doors. Brad slid into the passenger seat and placed a bouquet of flowers on his lap before pulling the door closed.

“I hope these are okay,” Brad said as they pulled away. “I wasn’t sure what kind of flowers your mother liked.”

“You didn’t need to get her anything,” Cory said.

“Yes, I did. My mother would kill me if I showed up at someone’s for dinner empty-handed,” Brad said, a bit shocked.

“Does that mean if I ever visit your mother’s, I need to bring something?” Cory asked, and Brad nodded. “I hope I remember.”

“It’s just good manners,” Brad explained. “It’s what you should always do. If someone is gracious enough to invite you to their home, you bring a small gift as a way of saying thank you.”

Cory glanced over at Brad when they stopped at the light. “Not in my family. You bring your appetite and prepare to eat fast. With four kids, the fastest eater got dibs on seconds, and the others were out of luck.”

Brad’s eyes widened. “I suppose that’s one of the things I missed out on by being an only child.
