It was half an hour later when Katie let out a cry.

‘Oh, my God,’ she said, hastily pushing her chair back and jumping to her feet. ‘What is that smell?’

Flutter looked up innocently.

‘Ah, yeah, sorry about that. It’s probably Winston,’ he said. ‘He gets a bit windy sometimes.’

‘What d’you mean he gets a bit windy?’

‘I mean he farts. And they’re usually silent ones, so you don’t know until it’s too late.’

Katie looked down at Winston who continued snoring loudly.

‘In his sleep?’

‘It seems to be worse when he’s asleep.’

Now she turned to Flutter, hands on hips.

‘I suppose you think it’s funny.’

‘Not if I’m within range when he does it,’ said Flutter, trying hard not to grin.

‘Ha, ha, very funny. What have you been feeding him?’

‘It’s normal dried dog food, expensive stuff, supposedly the best, according to Doris. But the problem isn’t the food, it’s the dog. He’s a thief, you see. He might look slow, but he’s like greased lightening when there’s food lying around, and he’ll steal anything that’s left where he can reach it.’

‘What on earth could he have stolen that makes him smell that bad?’

‘Because Doris had gone and it was getting late I ordered a Chinese takeaway last night, and I ate it in front of the TV.’

‘And you gave some to Winston? Isn’t that cruelty to animals?’

‘I didn’t give it to him. I put the dishes on the coffee table, and he helped himself when I went to the kitchen to get a drink.’

‘What exactly did he steal?’

‘A portion of duck in black bean sauce. Enough for two.’

‘Enough for two?’

’Turns out I wasn’t as hungry as I thought I was.’

‘Is he going to keep on doing it?’

Flutter shrugged.

‘I dunno,’ he said. ‘I’ve only known him for a few days, so your guess is as good as mine.’

‘He’s not sleeping under my desk if he’s going to keep doing that.’

‘Well, don’t blame me,’ said Flutter. ‘I did try to warn you not to leave him there, but did you listen? No you didn’t because you were so busy allowing him to hypnotise you with those big sad eyes and saying how cute he was, you chose to ignore my advice.’

Katie couldn’t argue with those facts.

‘Does he have any other bad habits I should know about?’

‘Apart from snoring, stealing, farting, and being manipulative? No, he’s more or less perfect, apart from those.’

‘You think this is funny, don’t you?’

Flutter did his best to look innocent.

‘The smell usually disperses quite quickly so you should be safe to sit down again now,’ he said.

Katie looked uncertainly at her desk and the snoring dog.

‘If he does it again...’

‘If he does it again, I’ll make him move, I promise,’ said Flutter.

‘You’d better,’ grumbled Katie, as she returned to her seat, gingerly placing her feet either side of Winston as if he were an unexploded bomb.
